Overview

Under the general direction of the Associate Director, Finance, and with latitude for exercising discretion and independent judgment, perform a variety of analytical and financial functions for the Department of Internal Medicine. The position provides financial oversight of 11 sections and manages a centralized financial team. It serves as a partner between sections and centralized financial units to aid leadership in decision‑making, providing analysis to assist with strategic direction and overseeing the centralized financial analyst team that handles reporting, YBT maintenance, Workday ledger monitoring, and timely, accurate reporting to departmental and sectional leadership.

Responsibilities
  • Ensure the proper implementation of COA management and consistent standards across all sections, including the development of a standardized hierarchy for COA utilization.
  • Implement Yale Medicine initiatives to lead financial reporting across practice locations, running analyses to advise on short‑term and long‑term strategic goals.
  • Manage, track, and analyze departmental financial reporting, determining budgetary constraints and identifying areas of excessive spending or under‑utilization based on financial goals and priorities.
  • Oversee forecast projections of the central financial team, monitor budget versus actual performance, and work with the Associate Director of Finance to implement corrective actions.
  • Participate in annual closeout and monthly monitoring processes, providing technical assistance and direction to central finance personnel on moderate to complex problems and projects.
  • Serve as key financial support for Central Administration and perform special projects as needed.
  • Create specialized reports using Workday, YBT, and Excel to examine financial records and track monthly, quarterly, and yearly tasks.
  • Distribute requests from YSM and Department Central Administration to sections, representing departmental needs, challenges, and opportunities.
  • Assist in the development of departmental policies and procedures related to financial reporting and transaction processing in line with University and YSM policies.
  • Provide direction to the central financial team to fulfill all ad‑hoc reporting requests from Department and Sectional leadership.
  • Interact on the department's behalf with business administrators, chairs, directors, University officials, medical directors, research, administrative, and clinical staff to support the clinical, research, administrative, financial, and operational needs of the department.
  • Ensure implementation of strategies, policies, and procedures developed by institutional process leaders, including the transformation of planning and financial management practices.
  • Manage team resources for long‑term and annual budgeting, forecasting, and financial management activities.
  • Develop and maintain knowledge of University finance and budgeting processes and applicable policies and procedures.
  • Review and recommend budget and financial management processes to achieve simplicity, speed, and quality for the finance department.
  • Interpret accounting policies, procedures, and processes, reporting findings to finance department management.
  • Ensure compliance with Federal, State regulations, contractual requirements, and University policy.
  • Manage staff of exempt and non‑exempt employees.
  • May perform other duties as assigned.
Required Skills & Ability
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, with the ability to adapt style to address individuals at all levels and communicate policy and procedures to staff and faculty.
  • Proficiency in creating new and complex reports (Excel, Word, etc.) for tracking, analysis, and communication of financial information.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to lead a financial team, providing consistent, timely, and accurate financial support to departmental leadership; well‑developed analytical and problem‑solving skills.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of financial and economic concepts, modeling and analysis, budgeting and planning principles, and processes.
