Position Focus

The Royalty and Publishing Accountant will have overall responsibility for supervising and training the Royalty Assistant to ensure timely and accurate royalty reporting and ensuring that the royalty tracking system is maintained and upgraded as necessary. In addition, the Accountant will maintain select balance sheet accounts of the Press, make journal entries as appropriate, and analyze the movements in these accounts and prepare select financial reports as needed.

Working with partners and University Treasury, the role will ensure wires are journaled correctly and payments (permissions and ebooks) are matched and reported by ISBN for the royalty system.

Skills and Abilities
  • Well‑developed organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to manage multiple tasks efficiently in a fast‑paced environment. Ability to supervise and train junior staff, including student workers.
  • Strong understanding of general accounting principles and financial management, including journal entries, cost transfers, and reconciliations.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to work effectively with diverse groups and provide high‑level customer service.
  • Ability to exercise independent judgment, maintain strict confidentiality, and demonstrate initiative in problem‑solving.
  • Proficiency with computer applications, especially Excel, and financial reporting systems.
Preferred

Education and Experience
  • Four years of accounting experience in a publishing, manufacturing, or production environment providing financial reporting support to staff and authors.
  • Experience with university financial systems and knowledge of institutional financial policies and procedures.
  • Strong analytical and problem‑solving experience with resolving royalty recipient queries.
  • Prior experience in a higher education or publishing setting, providing financial reporting support to faculty, staff and authors.
Principal Responsibilities
  • Financial analysis and reporting: analyze and synthesize information, design and create accurate and timely reports that add value to the management of university operations. Apply GAAP to specialized areas to properly report on financial conditions.
  • Financial methods & systems: contribute to the planning and improvement of practices, processes and systems. Collaborate with all levels of internal and external contacts to carry out department goals and provide a high level of service.
  • Accounting and reconciliation: accurately record enterprise or subsystem transactions, verify entries, perform complex multi‑system reconciliations, navigate multiple reporting tools, and ensure adherence to GAAP and regulatory requirements.
  • Strategic resource: translate department finance goals into objectives, identify potential financial opportunities, risks, ideas and solutions, and engage appropriate stakeholders.
  • Compliance and risk management: establish, implement and maintain strong internal controls to provide reasonable assurance of effective use of resources, accurate financial information, and adherence to contractual obligations and regulatory requirements.
  • Mentor, lead and supervise staff.

    Education and Experience (Role)
    • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Business, Economics or Finance and four years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
