Overview
Southern Connecticut State University (SCSU) is recruiting for a full-time Telecommunications Dispatcher in the University Police Department, located in New Haven, CT. The role supports safety and security for students, faculty, and staff and aligns with community policing principles including crime prevention, omnipresence, and partnerships.
POSITION TYPE:
Full-Time. All shifts available (Training to be held on second shift).
- Receive, transmit, and relay police, fire, medical and other emergency information to and from appropriate personnel.
- Provide dispatch responses to calls such as traffic accidents and injuries on state property and police, fire, and medical emergencies.
- Determine and evaluate emergency or non-emergency situations, prioritize and take appropriate action, and relay information to offsite personnel.
- Operate communications equipment (computer, radio, telephone) and related systems.
- Operate computer aided dispatch (CAD), NCIC, and COLLECT systems.
- Monitor cameras and alarm systems within the agency complex; log communications and maintain records for identification purposes.
- Advise and coordinate with agency units and/or outside agencies (e.g., State Police, local public safety) as needed.
- Respond independently to calls from the general public and refer to appropriate personnel; monitor additional radio frequencies as required.
- Perform varied clerical and statistical work as needed.
- Perform related duties as required.
- Knowledge of and ability to operate and monitor communications equipment; radio terminology and coding; and interpretation/application of state and federal laws, regulations, and procedures related to communications.
- Interpersonal, oral and written communication, and computer keyboarding skills.
- Ability to listen and communicate calmly, effectively, and courteously in emergency and non-emergency situations; speak clearly; act under stress with judgment and discretion; handle confidential information; follow instructions; and maintain records.
General
Experience:
One (1) year of experience in dispatching and operation of communication equipment.
- Incumbents may be required to possess and retain certification as a Telecommunicator.
- Incumbents may be required to obtain and retain certification in NCIC and COLLECT within three (3) months of appointment.
- Incumbents may be required to work a schedule that includes weekends, evenings, and holidays.
- Background investigation may be conducted; suitability for permanent appointment is determined through checks of references and stated qualifications.
- A physical examination may be required; applicants must possess normal hearing and vision.
- Working conditions may include tiring positions for long periods.
