OverviewThe Assistant Radiation Safety Officer (ARSO) is an advanced professional position responsible for managing multiple Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) programs and services to address significant risks and compliance at the university. The role involves assessing compliance, reviewing inspection findings, conducting investigations, and leading the development of systems to manage and minimize risk and liability. The Safety Officer interprets regulations and implements programs in line with the university's mission, exercising discretion and independent judgment.
Responsibilities include consulting with faculty, staff, and students, liaising with regulatory agencies, and serving as a subject matter expert and trainer for EHS staff. The position also assumes responsibility for corrective actions and program improvements when serious issues are identified. Under the direction of the Radiation Safety Officer (RSO), the ARSO plans and directs, coordinates, and provides oversight of multiple radiation safety programs.
The ARSO will have programmatic responsibilities for human uses of radiation and will serve as a subject matter expert in these areas. This includes the Yale Biomedical Imaging Institute, the Yale Radioactive Drug Research Committee, the Yale Research Investigational New Drug committee, and research/clinical uses of x-ray and Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI). The ARSO will be named as an Associate RSO on the limited scope Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) medical license.
The ARSO assists in oversight of daily radiation safety operations and program development and provides specific expertise to the health physics program, safety audits, training, Biomedical Imaging Institute health physics support including cyclotron operations, and the handling and investigation of incidents. The ARSO assures compliance with Nuclear Regulatory Commission and State of Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP) standards, codes and regulations.
Additionally, the ARSO performs varied and complex administrative duties requiring independent judgment and the application of policies and procedures as set by Yale Environmental Health and Safety and the Radiation Safety Committee. The ARSO will ensure that campus policies and state and federal regulations are followed to achieve a safe environment for staff, faculty and students. This position will develop and recommend improvements to processes in all areas of responsibility.
The ARSO works with other EHS staff to maintain a strong NRC licensed radiation safety program.
- MS or PhD in Health Physics, Radiological Health or other functionally relevant field and CHP. If applicant does not have comprehensive certification by the American Board of Health Physics upon hire, the ability to qualify for CHP.
- Five(5) + years of medical health physics experience at a medical research center or hospital.
Skills And Abilities
- Advanced knowledge in EHS science and state and federal EHS regulations, standards, and guidance; 24-hour OSHA HAZWOPER certification (required after hire).
- Superior verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to be an effective trainer and public speaker, and to maintain collaborative relationships with coworkers, students, faculty, staff, and external entities.
- Demonstrated technical EHS skills, including monitoring and sampling methodology, and the ability to perform technical calculations and hazard evaluations.
- Ability to manage and prioritize multiple programs, projects, and tasks across multiple university locations.
- Ability to use word processing, spreadsheet, and database applications, including EHS Integrator. Ability to report survey findings and maintain required regulatory records.
- Must be able to pass an NRC 10 CFR Part 37 background check to qualify as a NRC approved Trustworthy and Reliable Reviewing Official (RO)
- Must be able to qualify as an Associate RSO on NRC Medical Use license
- Responsible for oversight of high-risk and significant EHS compliance programs that conform with applicable regulations, standards, and Yale policies. Manage daily operations of these programs, including development of written policies, procedures, and standards, as well as the creation of compliance reports to document completion of assigned tasks.
