Overview
Job Description A position is available for a Liability Claims Manager specializing in Commercial Lines. This role involves managing claims for public entities such as police departments, fire departments, town halls, and schools within Connecticut. The position is based in New Haven, CT, with a hybrid work arrangement requiring two days per week in the office.
Responsibilities- Claim Assignment and Oversight:
Review incoming claim notices and assign cases based on adjusters’ expertise, territory, and claim complexity. Provide guidance on coverage analysis, investigations, liability determination, and case evaluations. - File Review and Monitoring:
Maintain a system for timely follow-up on complex, litigated, and non-litigated claims. Conduct periodic reviews of claim files assigned to team members. - Quality Assurance and Compliance:
Evaluate the quality of work and ensure compliance with claim handling standards. Provide feedback, training, and implement corrective actions as necessary. - Coaching and Development:
Offer ongoing coaching, mentoring, and training in areas such as investigation techniques, reserve setting, and claim resolution. - Authority Management:
Review and approve reserve and settlement recommendations exceeding adjusters’ authority levels. Collaborate with senior management to establish authority levels. - Caseload Management:
Monitor individual adjuster caseloads to ensure alignment with performance standards. - Oversight of External Resources:
Supervise the quality of work performed by third-party service providers, including independent adjusters, investigators, attorneys, and case managers. - Reporting and Communication:
Provide updates to senior management on claim quality, service compliance, reserving trends, and legal developments. Present cases for trial and settlement authority to the Claims Advisory Committee. - Personnel Management:
Conduct performance evaluations, manage career development, and oversee training for team members. - Outside Counsel Management:
Monitor the performance and billing practices of external legal counsel to ensure cost-effective representation.
- Extensive experience in commercial General Liability claims, with a focus on public entity insurance.
- Minimum of 8-10 years of experience in the insurance industry, including at least 5 years in litigation and 5 years in commercial GL claims.
- At least 1 year of experience handling public entity claims in Connecticut.
- Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration or a related field is preferred.
- Professional designations such as AIC, CPCU, ARM, or SCLA are recommended.
- Connecticut Adjuster’s License or equivalent is required.
- Strong knowledge of local and state laws, claims investigation techniques, and the ability to communicate technical, legal, and medical issues effectively.
- Proven leadership skills with at least 2 years of supervisory experience.
- Oversee a team of claims adjusters, managing a caseload of up to 120-130 claims.
- Provide technical guidance and support to team members in handling complex and litigated claims.
- Conduct regular file reviews and ensure compliance with established claim handling standards.
- Collaborate with external resources, including attorneys and investigators, to ensure high-quality outcomes.
- Communicate regularly with senior management to provide updates on department performance and key issues.
- Manage personnel-related functions, including performance evaluations and training.
- Competitive salary ranging from $120,000 to $150,000.
