SummaryAs an integral member of the Yale New Haven Health System (YNHHS) healthcare team, the Registered Professional Nurse (RN) upholds the YNHHS mission, vision, values and strategic initiatives to provide the highest level of patient‑centered care. The RN practices professional nursing as a registered nurse within the legal and ethical framework established by the Connecticut Nurse Practice Act, American Nurses Association Scope and Standards for Nursing Practice, ANA Code of Ethics for Nurses and the YNHHS Professional Practice Model.
The professional role of the RN is exemplified by the qualities of leadership, delegation, collaboration, effective communication and quality outcomes.

The RN provides care that:
- Establishes and maintains a therapeutic relationship with the patient and family, incorporating cultural and diversity considerations into practice.
- Communicates and works collaboratively with the patient, family and health‑care team members.
- Respects the patient’s values, preferences and expressed needs, and collects holistic data to plan and evaluate care outcomes.

- Utilizes the nursing process components of assessment, diagnosis, outcomes identification, planning, implementation and evaluation.
- Collects pertinent data and information relevant to the consumer’s health or situation.
- Analyzes data to determine diagnoses or issues.
- Identifies expected outcomes and develops individualized care plans.
- Implements and coordinates care delivery and transitions.

- Evaluates progress toward outcomes.
- Standards of Professional Performance
- Engages in professional role activities appropriate to education and position, including ethics, culturally congruent practice, communication, collaboration, leadership, education, evidence‑based practice, research, quality of practice, evaluation, resource utilization and environmental health.
- Practices ethically, communicates effectively, collaborates with stakeholders, leads within the professional setting, seeks current knowledge, integrates evidence and research into practice, contributes to quality nursing practice, and utilizes appropriate resources to provide safe, effective and fiscally responsible care.
- Graduation from an accredited school of nursing; BSN preferred.
- All newly hired registered nurses must have current BCLS certification or obtain it within one month of hire.

- Licensed and currently a registered nurse in the State of Connecticut.
- Clinical specialty certification highly encouraged.

- Accountable to practice within the Scope and Standards of Practice within the nurse practice act of the state.
- RNs at YNHH are accountable to YNHHS standards of professional behavior.
- Nursing practice is overseen by the Chief Nursing Officer (CNO) in each delivery network, with accountability to the chain of command and team members.
- Accountable to the Scope and Standards of practice noted in this job description.
- Requires prolonged standing, walking, use of sight, hearing and touch.
- May be exposed to infectious diseases and physical, mental and emotional illness.
- Moderate stress and risk of injury from patient care.
- Standing/walking for more than half of the day; frequent bending, reaching, pushing, pulling, twisting and lifting.
- Must be able to assist pushing, pulling, lifting patients ranging from five (5) to three hundred (300) pounds.
