Responsibilities- Clinical Care:
The Physician Assistant (PA) or the Nurse Practitioner (NP) provides assessment, triage, and therapeutic management of patient and family needs throughout the disease process as an integral part of an interdisciplinary team. The NP/PA may work in inpatient, ambulatory, or outpatient settings, collaborating with supervising physicians in accordance with state law and hospital policy and may provide autonomous team‑based care. - Medical History and Examination:
Obtains histories, performs physical examinations, reviews or orders diagnostic tests, formulates and manages treatment plans, and may perform procedures, prescribe medication, and manage patient populations within scope of practice. - Operative Assistant:
May function as first or second assistant on operative cases within scope and job prerequisites. - Emergency Response:
Responds to emergency situations within YNHHS parameters.
- Educates patients and families on care, treatment plans, potential side effects, and discharge plans in collaboration with supervising physicians.
- Provides psychosocial support to patients, families, and significant others in a caring, ethical, professional manner as part of the multidisciplinary team.
- Ensures appropriate documentation in compliance with hospital and regulatory requirements, protecting patient information from unauthorized disclosure.
- Demonstrates high standards of moral and ethical behavior, professionalism, compassion, and commitment to patient care.
- Ensures compliance with patient‑related healthcare regulations and standards.
- Engages in projects that maintain and advance professional competency.
- Serves as clinical resource for new house staff and provides education where appropriate.
- Reports safety events and near misses to demonstrate reliability and safety culture.
- May serve as clinical preceptor or mentor to students and other health‑care professionals.
- May collaborate on research, quality assurance, and performance improvement projects.
- Maintains all required hospital policies and procedures.
- Education:
Graduate from an accredited Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant program. - Experience:
Prefer clinical experience as NP/PA within the specialty/service line; no formal requirement. APRNs, PAs, CRNAs and CNMs must be appointed to the affiliated medical staff and credentialed through the medical staff process. - Licensure:
Active PA Certification (NCCPA) and Connecticut State PA License, or active RN or NP license in Connecticut, with required ACLS, BLS, and additional certifications as indicated (DEA, PALS, NRP).
