The Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner is a licensed professional provider who functions in collaboration with an attending physician in a variety of practice settings vides exceptional direct diagnostic and therapeutic patient care to the highest standards of the organization as part of a multidisciplinary team. Cultivates a patient‑centric environment which focuses on the whole individual inclusive of physical, psychosocial, spiritual and functional needs of the patient, family, and significant others.

Serves as the focal professional for the continuity of care within scope of practice standards, as well as specialty‑specific standards to address and resolve problems that may arise.

Responsibilities
  • Provide comprehensive ambulatory care as an Advanced Practice Provider (Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant) within a dynamic orthopedic float role.
  • Support a wide range of orthopedic specialties, including trauma, foot and ankle, pediatric orthopedics, adult and pediatric spine, sports medicine, and arthroplasty.
  • Float across multiple clinic locations throughout the greater New Haven area, ensuring flexible, team‑based coverage.
  • Deliver high‑quality patient care including evaluations, follow‑ups, treatment planning, and patient education.
  • Collaborate closely with orthopedic surgeons and multidisciplinary teams to ensure continuity of care.
  • Maintain adaptability in a fast‑paced clinical environment while supporting varying provider and clinic needs.
  • Full‑time, 40 hours per week, Monday through Friday schedule; no weekends, call, holidays, or night shift responsibilities — offering strong work‑life balance.
  • Open to new graduates, with preference given to candidates with prior general orthopedic experience.
  • Perform clinical care duties including assessment, triage, therapeutic management of patient/family needs throughout the disease process, working as part of an interdisciplinary team.
  • Obtain medical histories, perform physical examinations, review and order diagnostic tests, formulate and manage patient treatment plans, and prescribe medications in accordance with institutional and state guidelines.
  • May perform procedures and function as an assistant on operative cases within scope and job educational prerequisites.
  • Respond to emergency situations within the YNHHS parameters.
  • Educate patients/families on care and available resources, collaborate on discharge instructions, treatment plans, and medication side effects.
  • Provide psychosocial support to patients and families in a caring, ethical manner.
  • Ensure appropriate documentation within hospital and regulatory requirements, and protect information from unauthorized access.
  • Demonstrate high standard of moral and ethical behavior, professionalism, compassion, and commitment to patient care.
  • Ensure compliance with healthcare regulations, standards, and recommendations.
  • Engage in projects that maintain and advance professional competency, serve as a clinical resource for new staff, participate in safety reporting, and collaborate on research, quality assurance, and performance improvement projects.
Qualifications
  • Graduate from an accredited Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant Program.
  • Prefer clinical experience as a NP/PA within the specialty; none required.
  • APRNs, PAs, CRNAs, and CNMs are required to be appointed to the Affiliated Medical Staff of a YNHHS Hospital and credentialed through the Medical Staff process.
  • Evidence of current competence to practice (e.g., reference letters) must be obtained during the Medical Staff appointment process.
  • Active PA certification (NCCPA) and Connecticut state license, plus ACLS/BLS certification (and if applicable DEA, PALS, NRP). Additional licensure may be required.
  • Or, active Connecticut state Registered Nurse License, Nurse Practitioner License, board specialty certification as appropriate, plus ACLS/BLS, DEA, PALS, NRP as applicable.
