McGivney 5 will be an Intermediate Care neuro/surgical unit within the new Adams Neuroscience Tower at Yale New Haven Hospital. The unit will serve a diverse patient population, including neuroscience, spine, vascular, and general surgery patients, as well as individuals recovering from stroke and complex surgical interventions.
This unit is defined not only by its specialized patient population but also by the advanced level of nursing assessment and monitoring required. Patients admitted to McGivney 5 require frequent, high‑acuity observation, complex clinical management, and rapid intervention. Our team includes nurses with decades of experience alongside emerging clinicians building their expertise toward careers in critical care, research, or advanced practice.
ResponsibilitiesPatient Population & Clinical Focus
- Neuroscience and stroke patients requiring close neurological monitoring
- Post‑operative spine, vascular, and general surgery patients
- Patients requiring intermediate‑level care between ICU and acute care
- Individuals with complex medical and surgical needs requiring enhanced surveillance
- Perform Q2 neurological, vascular, and hemodynamic assessments
- Provide close post‑operative monitoring and surveillance
- Identify subtle changes in patient condition and elevate care appropriately
- Manage complex clinical scenarios with a high degree of autonomy and critical thinking

Nurses on McGivney 5 practice at a high level of clinical judgment, serving as a critical bridge between the ICU and acute care environments. The unit fosters a collaborative, multidisciplinary approach within a state‑of‑the‑art neuroscience and surgical care setting, supporting excellence in patient outcomes and professional nursing practice.
Documentation & Compliance- Maintain accurate electronic health records (EHR) and adhere to hospital protocols, infection control, and safety standards.
- Graduation from an accredited school of nursing. BSN preferred. All newly hired registered nurses must have current BCLS certification or obtain it within one month of hire.
- Licensed and a currently registered nurse in the State of Connecticut. Clinical specialty certification highly encouraged.
- BLS required
- Registered Nurse is the foundational job description for all RNs. All RNs are encouraged to advance through the SPIRE clinical advancement program.
- Requires prolonged standing; walking; use of sight, hearing, and touch. May be exposed to infectious diseases. Will be exposed to physical, mental and emotional illness as well as end‑of‑life conditions and death. Moderate stress and risk of injury from patient care. Standing/walking for more than half the day. Must be able to assist pushing/pulling/lifting patients ranging from five (5) to three hundred (300) pounds.
