Oncology Nurse
Job Overview
The Registered Nurse (RN) works under the supervision of the Nurse Manager/Clinical Coordinator and is responsible for assessment, planning, implementation, evaluation, and supervision of individual patient care on a nursing unit or department according to unit policies and procedures. The RN may assume the charge role, delegate and oversee unit activities, and if required may work on other nursing units as the distribution of staff and patients necessitates.
The role covers several specialty units, including:
- Hematology Oncology / Bone Marrow Transplant – care for acute patients with hematologic disorders such as leukemia, lymphoma, and multiple myeloma, including complex chemotherapy, biotherapy, stem cell and marrow transplant, CART cell therapy, and clinical trials.
- Adult Medical Oncology – multidisciplinary care for solid tumor malignancies and hematology oncology overflow, focusing on chemotherapy, biotherapy, oncologic emergencies, and supportive care.
- Oncology Extended Care Clinic (ECC) – hybrid urgent‑care unit providing triage, evaluation, and treatment for oncology patients in an ED‑like setting for issues such as neutropenic fever, nausea, pain, electrolyte abnormalities, and shortness of breath.
- Women’s Oncology – care for gynecologic oncology patients through diagnosis, surgery, chemotherapy, biotherapy, side‑effect management, palliative, hospice care, and breast postoperative reconstruction.
- Surgical Oncology – post‑surgical unit for diagnosis, treatment, and surgical management of cancer, covering head & neck, thoracic, urology, endocrine, and other service lines.
- Sickle Cell / Medical Oncology – focus on sickle cell disease and solid tumor malignancies with telemetry monitoring, crisis management, pain control, oncologic emergencies, and supportive care.
Full‑time and part‑time schedules are available, including night shift and rotating days.
Responsibilities- Assess the patient’s physical and psychosocial condition on an ongoing basis throughout the continuum of care.
- Develop, communicate, and document a plan of care reflecting individualized patient problems and interventions to achieve desired outcomes, involving the patient, family, and healthcare team.
- Implement and coordinate the plan of care in collaboration with the healthcare team.
- Evaluate the effectiveness of the plan of care, patient response to care, and readiness for discharge, revising the plan as needed and making referrals where indicated.
- Provide educational opportunities and document outcomes.
- Function as a charge nurse, delegating and supervising unit activities.
- Meet performance expectations for customer service, teamwork, resource utilization, staff and self‑development as outlined in performance review.
- Perform other duties as assigned or directed to ensure smooth operation of the department/unit.
- Demonstrate competency in care of neuro patients, including neuro assessment, airway management, assistance with special neuro procedures, suctioning of pharyngeal, endotracheal, tracheostomy per established policy, and use of equipment for halo brace and ventilator support.
- Graduate of an accredited school of nursing.
- Proficient in use of computer software including electronic patient records and the internet for literature searches related to patient care.
- Valid State of Connecticut Registered Nurse license.
- Experience or certification in NP 11 – Hematology Oncology, NP 12 – Medical Oncology, NP 14 – Gynecology Oncology, NP 15 – Surgical Oncology, or Smilow East – Sickle Cell/Hematology Oncology is preferred.
- Ability to work full‑time or part‑time shifts, including night shift and rotating days.
