Job Title
Postgraduate Associate-Jha Lab @ Yale Genetics, AI/ML, Gene Regulation
Job Number126146
LocationNew Haven, US
Job DescriptionThe Jha lab in the Department of Genetics at the Yale School of Medicine is seeking a highly motivated postgraduate researcher to investigate the sequence basis of the 3D Genome Architecture. 2 meters of human DNA are compactly packed in the ~10 μm nucleus of each cell. This DNA organization governs transcriptional regulation and thus profoundly impacts the cellular states underlying health and disease.
The project will employ cutting‑edge computational biology and AI/ML approaches to understand how 3D genome architecture affects tissue‑agnostic and tissue‑specific gene regulation. The Jha lab is a collaborative, supportive, and ambitious research community. We believe that diverse teams do better science and strive to create an environment with transparent expectations and thoughtful mentorship, where researchers from different backgrounds can thrive.
More broadly, the postgraduate researcher will benefit from the vibrant scientific environment in the Department of Genetics. The Department of Genetics believes that outstanding science is driven by curiosity. We strive to create an inclusive community of faculty, staff, and students whose voices and contributions are valued and respected, and who better represent the communities we serve. We provide an inclusive workplace that promotes and values diversity in age, gender identity, race, sexual orientation, physical ability, and ethnicity.
Diversity is our commitment and our passion; we invite you to be part of it.
The postgraduate researcher can expect to learn about cutting‑edge AI/ML techniques in genomics, with a particular focus on interpretable models for 3D genome architecture and gene regulation. The project can be tailored to the candidate’s specific interests and skills. The postgrad can also expect to have weekly individual meetings with the PI, to participate in and present at regular lab meetings, and to attend research seminars in the department and school.
MentoringMentoring will include regular meetings with the PI to discuss the project, the relevant scientific background and career goals. Within the lab, detailed oversight and guidance on learning requisite skills will be provided, with the expectation that the candidate will gain independence and autonomy.
EducationA bachelor’s degree or a master’s degree in computer science, data science, statistics, mathematics or biological sciences is required. Prior experience in computational biology, machine learning and Python programming is strongly desired. Any hands‑on experience working with High‑Performance Computing (HPC) clusters and GPUs is a plus.
QualificationsThe candidate should demonstrate a high level of personal initiative and organize their time effectively to tackle both short‑and long‑term goals. The candidate should be able to work responsibly with others, have excellent listening and strong verbal and written communication skills, keep accurate, informative lab notebooks and create and deliver in‑person presentations.
