Clinical Research, Medical Technologist & Lab Technician
Overview
The Clinical Research Support Laboratory (CRSL) is the primary non‑CLIA certified laboratory responsible for collecting, processing, stabilizing, documenting, shipping, and tracking all research biospecimens from patients participating in therapeutic clinical trials supported by the Yale Cancer Center Clinical Trials Office. The CRSL Research Technician supports the New Haven CRSLs, located in Smilow Cancer Hospital and Sterling Hall, by preparing and coordinating shipments of biological specimens from patients participating in numerous on‑site clinical trials.
Working under the direction of the Laboratory Manager, this role involves understanding and following protocols for a large number of trials with high accuracy and attention to detail in a fast‑paced environment, using independent judgement, and communicating with Clinical Trials Office staff and other research staff to process patient‑derived materials in inpatient and outpatient settings, interpret lab templates for hundreds of oncology studies, and prepare daily and future shipments of patient‑derived specimens.
Skills and Abilities
- Interpreting written policies, procedures, clinical trial protocols, and technical lab manuals.
- Experience with clinical trial laboratory sample processing and working in a regulated laboratory environment.
- Excellent communication, attention to detail, punctuality, strong organizational and interpersonal skills for team and independent work, and ability to manage change.
- Proficient with MS Office (Word, Excel, Outlook), OnCore, eShipGlobal, Box; willingness to learn new systems, processes, and technology, familiarity with EPIC and Barcloud.
- Knowledge of HIPAA and ensuring strict patient confidentiality.
- Proficiency with medical laboratory terminology and blood processing techniques.
- Research and collect data through complex laboratory experiments, techniques, and procedures; perform library research; conduct structured interviews; and other research methods. Analyze data using scientific or statistical techniques.
- Modify and plan research experiments, procedures, tests, or survey instruments; assist in research design; write and edit material for publication and presentation; report on status of research activities.
- Oversee and instruct research and support staff on technical procedures, equipment operation, and laboratory maintenance; schedule and coordinate research activities; set up, operate, and maintain laboratory equipment; modify equipment per experimental specifications.
- Order and maintain inventory of supplies; monitor hazardous work areas and laboratory safety; prepare related reports; prepare financial information and monitor budgets.
- Perform additional functions incidental to research activities.
Education and Experience
Two years of related work experience in the same job family and a Bachelor’s degree in a related field; or an equivalent combination of experience and education.
Health RequirementsThis role is a healthcare worker position. Health requirements include MMR vaccine or immunity, varicella (chickenpox) vaccine or immunity, TB screening, COVID vaccine according to University policy, hepatitis B vaccine or immunity, and annual flu vaccination.
