Overview
Commercial systems, real equipment, predictable hours. The Connecticut Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services (DMHAS) is seeking a full‑time (37.5 hours per week) HVAC Technician (PCN 153645) for the Connecticut Mental Health Center (CMHC) in New Haven.
Schedule- First shift: 7:30 AM – 3:30 PM

- Perform highly skilled HVACR work in accordance with trade practices and codes on heating, ventilation, cooling, and refrigeration systems.
- Operate, maintain, install, and repair complex HVACR systems, including equipment using Freon, chilled water, and advanced air‑handling components.
- Monitor and troubleshoot computerized control systems, ensuring proper airflow, pressurization, and system performance.
- Independently plan and execute work, including estimating materials, determining cooling requirements, and completing technical tasks with minimal supervision.
- Interpret technical data such as psychrometric charts and perform diagnostic tasks including minor fuel tests, gas leak checks, and water treatment adjustments.
- Four (4) years of experience in tasks in the heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration trade.
- Two (2) years of that experience must have been performing skilled HVACR trades.
Physical Requirements
- Physical strength, stamina, agility, and visual/auditory acuity sufficient to perform duties; physical examination may be required.
- Capable of lifting moderate to heavy weights and using protective equipment such as respirators and safety goggles.
- HVAC license (D2, S2)
- Current State of Connecticut heating, piping, and/or cooling license.
- All state employees must comply with Connecticut’s Drug‑Free Workplace Policy; a comprehensive medical examination, including drug screening, is required following a conditional offer.
- May be required to lift moderate to heavy weights and use protective equipment such as respirators and safety goggles.
- May be exposed to risk of injury from equipment, extreme weather conditions, and environmental conditions.
- May be required to complete hazardous materials training programs (e.g., asbestos, PCB, PFAS) consistent with EPA guidelines.
- At state airports, background investigation may be performed before certification for appointment.
