Overview

Transit America Services, Inc. / ACI joint venture, the operator of CTRail passenger service in Connecticut, is currently seeking certified Conductors for future service expansions in New Haven, CT.

The pay rate for this position is $44.91 per hour.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Supervise the operation and administration of the train while ensuring that equipment is operated in a safe and efficient manner in compliance with Federal and State regulations, NORAC Operating Rules, Metro North Operating Rules, Amtrak Air Brake & Train Handling Rules, Timetables and Special Instructions, Safety Rules, Transit America Services, Inc. Special Instructions and CTrail Contractual Instructions.
  • Provide customer service to all passengers as required and upon request or as needed.
  • Accept responsibility for the safety and security of all passengers and crew members.
  • Accept responsibility for compliance with rules and regulations without direct supervision.
  • Accept responsibility for employees assigned to a position for the purpose of training or familiarization.
  • Be qualified on the current version of all applicable operating rules.
  • Report to the train yard at the assigned time to:
  • Perform a job briefing.
  • Perform the necessary procedures to qualify the consist prior to departing the initial station.
  • Be required to interface with passengers and respond to passenger questions and concerns.
  • Make public address announcements as necessary.
  • Perform switching assignments as requested in cooperation with other departments.
  • Perform all required inspections, tests, procedures and complete all required paperwork.
  • Diagnose minor malfunctions and perform minor maintenance and servicing activities when maintenance personnel are not available.
  • Comply with train orders, train signals, radio communications, and railroad rules and regulations to ensure the safe and efficient operation of the train.
  • Identify and document equipment defects on the required forms.
  • Perform onboard fare inspection activities as required. Perform the duties of railroad Incident Commander at any accident or incident scene the train/crew is involved in.
  • The employee can be depended on to report to work at the scheduled time and is seldom absent from work.

  • Initiate the performance of a job briefing with all affected persons.
  • Must wear the required uniform in the performance of duties.
  • Interface with all passengers.
  • Interface with CTDOT representatives.
  • Interface with host railroad dispatchers and personnel.
  • Interface with TASI/ACI Managers/Supervisors and employees.
  • Interface with Federal, State and Local regulatory and emergency service personnel.
  • Regular and consistent engagement, participation and promotion of Herzog’s Culture and its essential behaviors are a requirement for this position.
  • Regular and predictable attendance and punctuality are a requirement for this position.

Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Valid state motor vehicle operator's license required.
  • Must maintain a valid Conductor Certification under 49 CFR Part 242.
  • Three years of safe, increasingly responsible railroad experience as a certified conductor in commuter rail operations, is preferable.
  • Any combination of education and experience that could provide the knowledge and ability to pass the required initial and annual examinations.
  • Crew members must have sufficient equipment knowledge and aptitude to restore equipment failures with support from maintenance of equipment personnel.
  • Ability to successfully complete all training and on-going training as required by the job.
  • Must be able to remain calm, rational and professional at all times while on duty.
  • Must be able to react calmly and effectively in emergency and life‑threatening situations.
  • Must be able to speak and write clearly in the English language.
  • Must be capable of communicating clearly and effectively with others.
  • Initiates and responds to oral and written communication.
