The State of Connecticut, Department of Transportation (Use the "Apply for this Job" box below). is now accepting applications for CDL Driver/Highway Maintenance Worker (Transportation Maintainer
2) positions in Groton, Haddam, Norwich, Old Saybrook, and Waterford, CT.

To qualify for a desired location you must live within 30 miles of the garage location.

Position Requirements
  • Valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) Class A or B with Tanker and Airbrakes endorsement. The Tanker endorsement is required at the time of hire.
  • Valid Medical Examiner’s Card (MEC).
  • Must list license number, class, expiration date, and issuing state in the 'Licenses and Professional Certifications' section of the application.
  • Military members or recently honorably discharged veterans with at least two years of commercial motor vehicle experience may qualify under the CDL Skills Test Exemption for Military Applicants.
Special Bridge

Position Requirements (OSHA )
  • Medically cleared for a respirator.
  • No facial hair.
  • Meet equipment weight requirement.
  • Night work required.
Position Highlights

Key Responsibilities
  • Perform a full range of tasks in the construction, maintenance, and repair of state roadways, bridges, and related facilities.
  • Maintain small and less complex mechanical equipment or assist on larger equipment.
  • Accept assignment to emergency duties, including snow and ice removal, mandatory winter overtime (November 1 – April 30) and potential work during storms, holidays, and weekends.
  • Operate trucks and equipment such as three‑to‑nine ton trucks, snow plows, compressors, aerial bucket trucks, and more.
  • Assist with mechanical repair, electrical maintenance, carpentry, masonry, welding, plumbing, and painting tasks.
  • Conduct traffic control, flagger duties, and wildlife hazard control as needed.
  • Prepare and check reports, operate two‑way radios, and fulfill guard/watch person duties at state‑owned airports if required.
Truck and Equipment
  • Trucks: 3‑ to 9‑ton trucks; dump, platform, and refuse trucks with or without winch; snow plows; dual dump trucks; crash attenuators; trailers and towed equipment; pickup trucks; bridged utility trucks; compressor trucks; aerial bucket trucks; wreckers with winch; tandem/10‑wheel dump trucks.
  • Equipment: Bituminous curbing machines; pothole patcher; tractor mowers; wood chippers; chainsaws; culvert cleaning machines; compressors and compressor tools; concrete mixers and vibrators; hydraulic or engine‑driven tools; test boring; 24‑tractor class; wing plows; forklifts.
Knowledge,

Skills and Abilities
  • Knowledge of construction, maintenance, and repair techniques of roadsides, roadways, bridges, and airports; processes and materials used in construction and maintenance trades.
  • Interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills.
  • Ability to perform routine repairs on complex mechanical equipment, operate the listed equipment, follow written and oral instructions, and use computer software.
Minimum Qualifications (General Experience)
  • One year of experience in construction, landscaping, commercial driving, snow plowing, maintenance and repair of roadsides, roadways, bridges, or airports, including operation and care of mechanical equipment or one of the recognized maintenance trades.
Substitutions Allowed
  • Graduation from a vocational or technical school with a diploma in a maintenance trade may substitute for general experience.
  • Completion of the Transportation Maintenance Registered Apprenticeship Program approved by the Department of Administrative Services may substitute for general experience.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with snow removal.
  • Experience with landscaping.
  • Experience with construction.
  • Experience driving CDL vehicles.
Special Requirements
  • Must possess and retain appropriate current licenses, permits, and/or certifications as required by the appointing authority.
