About the Role

Join Scotch Plains Fanwood Dental Care as an Orthodontic Assistant and be an integral part of our dedicated team. In this role, you will assist in providing orthodontic care to patients, ensuring they receive high-quality treatment and leave with healthy, confident smiles.

Responsibilities
  • Assist the orthodontist during patient examinations and treatment procedures.
  • Prepare and sterilize dental instruments and equipment.
  • Take and develop dental radiographs (X-rays).
  • Perform chairside procedures such as bonding, wire adjustments, and bracket repairs as directed.
  • Change archwires, ligatures (elastic bands), and springs as needed.
  • Take intraoral scans (e.g., digital scanners like iTero) and impressions for treatment planning.
  • Instruct patients on proper oral hygiene and care of appliances; provide guidance on emergencies (e.g., broken wires).
  • Educate patients and families about treatment plans, progress, and post-treatment care.
  • Ensure a clean, organized, and stocked treatment room; maintain inventory and order supplies as needed.
  • Manage patient records and keep appointment schedules up to date.
Essential Skills
  • Technical Proficiency:
    Knowledge of orthodontic anatomy, terminology, tools, and the ability to operate imaging equipment.
  • Manual Dexterity:
    Accurate placement of small orthodontic components with high precision.
  • Strong Communication:
    Ability to build rapport with patients (including children and teens) and explain procedures clearly.
  • Organization & Multitasking:
    Ability to manage multiple chairside tasks and maintain a fast-paced clinical schedule.
Common Qualifications
  • Education:

    High school diploma or GED; certification or associate degree in dental assisting with an orthodontics focus.
  • Certification:
    Preference for or requirement of the Certified Orthodontic Assistant (COA) credential from the Dental Assisting National Board (DANB).
  • Licensure:
    State-dependent requirements; some roles require permits for taking X-rays or expanded functions.
