Overview

Adaptive Programming Coordinator at Greater Somerset County YMCA
—This position supports the Somerset Hills branch of Greater Somerset County YMCA, a leading nonprofit committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. Primary responsibilities include administrative tasks related to our adaptive programming while also creating a safe and positive atmosphere that promotes member safety and engagement in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures.

Essential Functions
  • Plan, oversee, and expand adaptive programs, including fitness, arts, music, cooking, and social events, ensuring diverse and engaging experiences, including fitness classes, art workshops, music appreciation sessions, cooking classes, monthly social events, Adaptive Day Program, Saturdays in Motion, Adaptive Fitness, Dance abilities, Musical Me, and Adaptive Sports Classes.
  • Provide guidance to individuals with developmental, behavioral, and/or physical disabilities to foster a supportive and encouraging atmosphere where participants feel empowered to explore new activities and build confidence.
  • Plan organized events such as movie nights, paint and sip sessions, bingo games, and more.
  • Adapt activities and teaching methods to accommodate the unique needs and abilities of each participant, ensuring a positive and inclusive experience for all.
  • Identify and seek new opportunities for forming collaborations and offering programs and support services. Work closely with community partners that serve the special needs population to ensure that efforts are not duplicated and to identify and maximize synergies between programs.
  • Assist others with creatively implementing new programs and initiatives that cater to the special needs population.
  • Work with Development department to make recommendations for grant applications.
  • Address member concerns, direct members to program areas or instruction needs.
  • Collaborate and support the overall Youth Development team.
  • Responsible for marketing related to dance programs along with the GSC YMCA marketing team.
  • Assist with adaptive lessons by instructing and ensuring proper level placement of participants, ensuring continued quality of programs by assisting with training and consistency of staff in accordance with YMCA standards.
  • Fill in for instructors as needed.
  • Performs other duties as assigned and during shift down time.
Qualifications
  • A Bachelor's in Special Education, Applied Behavioral Analysis, Therapy, a related field OR equivalent experience working with special needs individuals
  • Experience working with individuals with intellectual/developmental disabilities preferred.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to connect with people of all abilities in a compassionate and respectful manner.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills, with the ability to plan and coordinate multiple activities simultaneously.
