B. RANDOLPH MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP: (FHS Students)
One (1) $250 scholarship will be awarded to Freehold Regional High School District graduating seniors in honor of Mrs. Norma
B. Randolph. The students must identify as Black/African-American and prepare to attend a 4-year accredited university, (preferably a Historically Black College or University - HBCU).
Mrs. Norma
B. Randolph, affectionately known as Ms. Norma, was a Freehold trailblazer. A lifelong Freehold resident, Ms. Norma constantly poured into the community until her very last day.
Ms. Norma was educated at the Court Street School, the once segregated primary school where all of the Black children of western Monmouth County went. Once she completed her matriculation at the Court Street School, Ms. Norma went on to attend high school at what we all know as "the Boro," but it was no easy feat. At the time, in order to go to high school, students had to pass a rigorous exam (or they could enter the workforce or go to trade school).
During her time at Freehold High School, Ms. Norma not only excelled in her studies, but also had the notable role of integrating the school's majorette team. The first time that she tried out, she wasn't selected. The next time that she did, she was chosen as a member and the entire community celebrated her success.
A selfless and determined organizer, Ms. Norma served as the president of Freehold's N.A.A.C.P. Branch, was a counselor for the United Black Women's Organization, and fulfilled many more meaningful roles—all of which were centered around helping others. Ms. Norma spent her lifetime pouring into others and advocating for the rights and success of Black people in Freehold and everywhere.
This scholarship was created in hopes that it will help 2 deserving students carry on Ms. Norma's legacy of compassion and courage. She was a well-loved and well-respected woman of God who valued education and volunteerism and I couldn't think of a better way to honor her.
