Qualifications- New Jersey Certificate as a Reading Specialist
- Demonstrates knowledge of effective teaching methods, developmentally appropriate class activities, and disaggregating data and identifying targeted interventions
- Familiarity with MTSS, Data Teams, and I&RS processes
- Training or certification in Wilson Reading System or Orton-Gillingham approach preferred
- Strong Communication and Interpersonal Skills

Job GoalThe Elementary Reading Specialist supports student literacy development through targeted reading intervention and instructional coaching. This role focuses on early literacy skills, data-driven instruction, progress monitoring, and collaboration with administration, teachers, and families to strengthen reading outcomes for elementary students.

EvaluationPerformance on this job will be evaluated annually in accordance with state law and the provision of the board's policy on the evaluation of certified staff.
Performance Responsibilities- Implements explicit, systematic, and differentiated instruction across all literacy areas, fully aligned to New Jersey Student Learning Standards (NJSLS).
- Implements district provided evidence-based literacy intervention programs and strategies to address identified skill gaps.
- Uses small-group and individualized instructional formats to maximize student engagement and progress.
- Administers and analyzes universal screening, diagnostic, formative, and progress-monitoring assessments to identify student needs and measure growth.
- Uses literacy assessment data to adjust instruction, set goals, and determine intervention effectiveness.
- Maintains accurate and up-to-date records of student progress in accordance with district expectations.
- Collaborates regularly on student progress with classroom teachers, special education staff, reading specialists, and administrators to align interventions with core instruction.
- Coaches staff in data analysis to inform instructional planning and intervention recommendations.
- Analyzes student performance data and develops recommendations for Data Team and I&RS meetings.
- Communicates student progress, strategies, and recommendations clearly and professionally with colleagues and families as appropriate.
- Develops a schedule of push-in/pull-out support on an as needed basis to meet the individual needs of students.
- Maintains professional competence and continuous improvement through in-service education activities and other professional growth activities.
