Qualifications:Valid New Jersey Instructional Certificate required. School Library Media Specialist Endorsement, preferred.Minimum experience as determined by the board.Demonstrated ability related to collection development, information technology, research methodology and library program designs for children and adolescents.Digital fluency is required.Effective problem‑solving, human relations, and communication skills.Required criminal history background check and proof of U.S. citizenship or legal resident alien status.Supervises:
Library paraprofessionals, parent volunteers, student library assistants, if applicable.
Job Goal:
To develop and coordinate educational media services and assist teachers and students in the effective use of the media center and information technology as a learning resource to support the school's curriculum and to develop students' information literacy skills.
Performance Responsibilities:
Is responsible for the operation and supervision of the school media center.Administers the library media program, developing policies and procedures to ensure efficient and equitable access, operations, and services.Maintains a comprehensive and efficient system for cataloging all media center materials and instructs teachers and students on use of the system.Establishes yearly and long‑term goals for the library media program aligned with the district's mission, curriculum content standards, educational goals, and objectives.Collaborates and co‑teaches with classroom educators to integrate library skills instruction, classroom instruction, and information literacy competencies across the curricula.Provides group and individual instruction that addresses multiple literacies, including information literacy, media literacy, visual literacy, and technological literacy.Assists teachers in the selection of books, digital resources, and other instructional materials and makes media center materials available to supplement the instructional program.Evaluates, selects and requisitions new media center materials to assure a current and balanced collection representing diverse points of view in accordance with the district materials selection procedures and informs teachers, students, and other staff of new acquisitions.Provides a sequential program of library skills instruction and instructs students in the use of various types of materials and information technology.Encourages learners' exploration and innovation at all levels in all curricular areas and in areas of personal interest through instruction and collection development.Helps students to develop habits of independent reference work and to develop skill in the use of reference material in relation to planned assignments.Promotes reading as a foundational skill for learning, personal growth, and enjoyment.Fosters culture of collaboration and innovation to empower teachers and learners.Conducts inservice education for teachers in the effective evaluation, selection and use of media and maintains professional library materials for teacher use.Presents and discusses materials with a class studying a particular topic at the request of the teacher.Prepares and administers the media center budget.Supervises the clerical activities necessary for the effective operation of the media center.Supervises the work performance of the media aide.Promotes relationships with external information sources and participates in electronic networks and resource sharing systems to expand the media center's capacity to access information globally.Maintains professional competence and continuous improvement through inservice education and other professional development activities.Performs such other related duties as may be assigned.Terms of Employment:
Salary and work year to be determined as mutually agreed upon in the Collective Bargaining Agreement. $150 per day for the first 19 days, followed by a per diem rate of $286.65 to $344.95 per day from day 20 onwards, commensurate with experience and qualifications.
