CompensationSubstitute teachers are paid $150.00 per day on a flat rate with no benefits. Substitutes filling paraprofessional or secretary positions receive $110.00 per day, no benefits. Board‑approved paid coaches will receive a stipend. Substitutes who do not complete at least 10 assignments per school year may not be board approved for the following school year and could be removed from the roster.
Qualifications- Must have a New Jersey teaching certificate, a substitute certificate, or be eligible to apply for a substitute certificate. Eligible applicants must have completed at least 30 college credits.
- All applicants must be cleared by the New Jersey Criminal History Review Unit and approved by the Board of Education.
- Substitute certificates issued by the State of NJ are valid for 5 years.
- A graduate of a school in the district within the last three years may not be permitted to work in that same building until year four post‑graduation.
- A teaching or substitute certificate is required for all paid coaches and unpaid volunteers. Unpaid clinicians do not need a substitute teacher certificate.
- Paid coaches who do not hold a NJ teaching certificate must obtain a substitute teacher certificate.
Applicants must complete the New Jersey substitute teacher application and the district substitute application. Required documents include:
- Criminal history clearance uploaded to the state application.
- Electronic transcripts from the college/university sent to Atlantic Co Substitutes .gov.
- Military verification if applicable.
- Case number for newly issued substitute certificate.
- PDF copy of your official certificate if you already hold a valid NJ teaching or substitute certificate.
Upon submission, applicants will receive a NJ Fingerprint Background Check form. After completing the fingerprint process, the District Business Office will contact the applicant to discuss next steps. All substitute teaching candidates are required to have a Mantoux (TB) test performed within the last six months. After board approval, applicants will receive an , an AESOP/Frontline Absence Management login, a district email address, and must complete the annual Public School Works online training prior to activation.
