Special Education Teacher Qualifications
  • Valid New Jersey certificate as Teacher of the Handicapped.
  • Effective problem solving, communication, organization, planning, record keeping and human relations skills.
  • Successfully completes required criminal history check and has proof of U.S. citizenship or legal resident alien status.
  • Other alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable.
Reports To

Principal/Director of Special Services

Job Goal

To support the district's instructional program by participating in the planning and implementation of instructional programs for children with educational disabilities.

Performance Responsibilities Instructional Planning
  • Participates with Child Study Team members and parents in constructing Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) for classified students.
  • Attends required IEP reviews with the Director of Special Services and other staff.
  • Selects appropriate instructional materials and media based on each student's IEP goals and objectives.
  • Devises a time schedule for instruction of each classified student in consultation with staff and building principal.
  • Provides a copy of the instructional schedule to the Director of Special Services and building principal.
  • Prepares for assigned classes and provides evidence of preparation upon request of administrative and supervisory personnel.
  • Participates in curriculum planning meetings with other staff members.
  • Takes all necessary precautions to protect supplies, equipment, materials and facilities needed for instruction.
Instruction
  • Meets and instructs classified students in accordance with their IEPs, school philosophy, curriculum, procedures and scheduled plans.
  • Strives to maximize educational achievement of each student.
  • Employs a variety of instructional techniques and media appropriate to the IEP goals.
  • Assesses on an ongoing basis student progress toward IEP goals and objectives.
  • Maintains accurate and complete records as required by district policy and administrative regulations.
  • Directs instructional and non‑instructional activities of aides and/or monitors assigned to the Special Education classroom.
Student Management
  • Creates a classroom environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the students' maturity and interests.
  • Implements all relevant policies and rules governing student life and conduct.
  • Develops reasonable classroom behavior rules in accordance with district policy and maintains order fairly and justly.
Professional Development
  • Strives to maintain and enhance professional competence through professional reading and participation in workshops, conferences and staff development programs.
  • Attends staff meetings as required.
  • Serves on staff committees on a voluntary basis.
School/Community Relations
  • Establishes cooperative relations and communicates with parents/guardians when necessary.
  • Cooperates professionally with administration and other staff.
  • Maintains confidentiality about students in accordance with state and federal law and district policy.
  • Attends parent communication activities such as Back‑to‑School Night and conferences as designated in the negotiated agreement with the Holmdel Township Education Association.
  • Consults jointly with parents and Child Study Team personnel before any changes in a student's IEP.
  • Provides progress reports to parents, classroom teachers and the Director of Special Services in accordance with Board Policy and regulations.
  • Communicates regularly with classroom teachers regarding IEP objectives, materials and instructional strategies.
Other Assigned Duties

Performs all other tasks and assumes duties as designated by the building principal or Director of Special Services.

Terms of Employment

Ten‑month year. Salary established in the Agreement between the Holmdel Township Board of Education and the Holmdel Township Education Association.

Evaluation

Performance of the position will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Agreement between the Holmdel Township Board of Education and the Holmdel Township Education Association.
