The Design Manager leads the design process for complex construction projects, ensuring efficient, cost-effective, and high-quality solutions that align with client scope, project objectives, and technical requirements. This role provides leadership throughout all phases of design, from schematic development through project completion, while collaborating closely with construction teams, design partners, and project stakeholders. The Design Manager is responsible for driving design strategy, improving constructability, managing project risk, and ensuring the timely delivery of all design documentation.
Locations include Raleigh, Birmingham, Indianapolis, Denver, San Francisco, and Seattle.
Job Responsibilities- Lead and manage the design process from schematic design through project completion
- Provide direction, coordination, and oversight to multidisciplinary design teams
- Collaborate with project leadership and construction teams to align design and execution strategies
- Establish and manage scopes of work and contractual agreements for design partners and consultants
- Facilitate communication among designers, construction teams, subcontractors, and client representatives
- Review and approve construction drawings and shop drawings for compliance with project and contractual requirements
- Oversee the timely preparation and delivery of all design documentation
- Develop and coordinate subcontractor contract language related to design scope and responsibilities
- Conduct design reviews to identify risks, improve constructability, and optimize project solutions
- Apply lean principles to improve efficiency, reduce costs, and enhance project safety
- Support the implementation of prefabrication and innovative construction methodologies
- Monitor project progress and proactively address design-related challenges
- Perform additional duties and responsibilities as assigned
- Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Architecture, or a related field from an accredited program, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
- Minimum of 10 years of experience in engineering, design management, construction administration, or a related field
- Extensive experience with design coordination, estimating processes, and project execution
- Strong understanding of architectural, structural, MEP, and HVAC systems
- Proven ability to develop strategic and innovative design solutions for complex projects
- Demonstrated leadership experience managing large, cross-functional teams
- Ability to collaborate effectively with consultants, subcontractors, stakeholders, and project teams
- Strong communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills
- Ability to work independently and within a multidisciplinary team environment
- Proficiency in interpreting technical drawings, specifications, and construction documentation

- This is a full-time traveling assignment supporting advanced technology construction projects
- Work is performed in both office environments and active construction sites
- Ability to navigate construction environments, including climbing stairs and ladders, is required
- Must be able to stand, walk, and move throughout construction areas for extended periods
- May require lifting or moving materials and equipment
- Exposure to construction site conditions, including noise, weather, dust, and mechanical hazards, should be expected
