Senior Legionella Consultant / Legionella Water Management SpecialistWe are seeking a Senior Legionella Consultant / Legionella Water Management Specialist to lead building water surveys, develop Water Management Plans (WMPs), and support compliance and outbreak response efforts in NJ, NY, and surrounding areas.
Role OverviewAs a Senior Legionella Consultant, you will be the trusted expert guiding clients and prospects through the full lifecycle of Legionella risk management— from survey and risk assessment
, to Water Management Plan development
, to annual review/certification and outbreak-related consulting
. This is a senior, client-facing role. Once you demonstrate your capability, you will operate with near-full autonomy in the field and with clients, while collaborating closely with our internal teams.
- Perform comprehensive surveys of building water systems, including:
- Domestic hot and cold water systems
- Cooling towers
- HVAC/hydronic systems
- Specialty systems (e.g., spas, fountains, humidifiers, process water)
- Understand and document all systems, piping, temperatures, flow, and points of use.
- Review and interpret plumbing drawings and mechanical plans.
- Collect and record detailed system and equipment data using Tower Water templates and tools (including Excel).
- Identify and communicate risks associated with Legionella and waterborne pathogens.
- Lead client kickoff meetings for WMP development.
- Ask all necessary questions to fully understand building operation, occupancy, and water use.
- Develop clear, technically accurate, risk-based Water Management Plans.
- Review draft plans with facility teams and revise as needed.
- Negotiate control measures, weekly/monthly maintenance activities, and define responsibilities.
- Design and adjust sampling strategies and sequences as part of the WMP.
- Lead annual onsite reviews and certifications of Water Management Plans.
- Verify whether anything has changed since prior assessments.
- Reassess systems, piping, temperatures, and flows for continued effectiveness and compliance.
- Recommend whether more or less sampling is needed, based on risk and historical data.
- Support clients in understanding and meeting applicable regulatory and industry standards.
- Serve as Tower Water's subject-matter expert during outbreak-related work, particularly under NYC and NJ ARTP expectations.
- Provide technically sound recommendations on immediate and long-term control measures.
- Support client communication with regulators and health authorities, as appropriate.
- Maintain high technical accuracy under time-sensitive, high-pressure conditions.
- File all related forms and plans when required
- Act as a trusted advisor to clients that value building health and occupant safety.
- Clearly communicate risks, plans, responsibilities, and expected outcomes.
- Explain regulatory requirements and compliance strategies in practical terms.
- Provide expert recommendations when systems do not meet standards.
- Support strong client satisfaction and long-term relationships.
- Assist in field employee understanding and development
- Maintain complete, accurate, and organized documentation for surveys, WMPs, certifications, and recommendations.
- Ensure data integrity and clear audit trails.
- Collaborate with compliance inspectors and field technicians; provide guidance and support where needed.
- Informally mentor and support junior staff-formal management is a plus, but not required.
- Bachelor's degree in a science or technical field
, such as:- Environmental Science
- Engineering (Mechanical, Chemical, Environmental, etc.)
- Microbiology, Biology, Public Health, or related discipline
- Demonstrated experience in:
- Water treatment, building water systems, and/or Legionella risk management
- Conducting field surveys and assessments in complex building environments
- Client-facing technical/consulting work
- Strong ability to:
- Read and interpret plumbing and mechanical drawings
- Understand system behavior, risk factors, and control measures
- Work independently in the field with minimal supervision once trained
- ASSE 12080 - Legionella Water Safety & Management Specialist
- CWT - Certified Water Technologist (typically requiring 5+ years of water treatment experience)
- Familiarity with NYC and NJ regulatory expectations for Legionella, cooling towers, and potable water systems
