The successful candidate will have experience in municipal engineering or public infrastructure projects. This individual will bring a strong understanding of municipal design standards and permitting processes, proficiency in AutoCAD Civil 3D, and the organizational and communication skills needed to manage multiple assignments and deadlines.

FPA’s Municipal Services Department supports municipal clients throughout New Jersey with the planning, design, permitting, and construction administration of municipal infrastructure and capital improvement projects. Our multidisciplinary teams work closely with municipalities, regulatory agencies, and utility providers to deliver practical solutions that address community infrastructure needs.

The Project Engineer will lead assigned technical work, coordinate designs across disciplines, and support projects through permitting and construction. This role involves participation in client and public meetings, construction administration, and field activities while offering the opportunity to manage increasingly complex assignments and develop greater technical judgment and project management experience.

Responsibilities
  • Support the planning, design, and execution of municipal infrastructure projects, including roadway improvements, drainage systems, water distribution, sanitary sewer systems, and capital improvement programs.
  • Prepare engineering calculations, technical specifications, reports, and construction documents in accordance with local, state, and federal regulations.
  • Develop plans, profiles, and details using design software such as AutoCAD Civil 3D.
  • Coordinate with project managers, senior engineers, and other disciplines to ensure projects are delivered on time and within budget.
  • Interface with municipal clients, regulatory agencies, and utility providers to support project approvals and permitting efforts.
  • Review shop drawings, RFIs, and contractor submittals during the construction phase.
  • Provide construction support services, including responding to field inquiries and performing site visits as needed.
  • Participate in client meetings, public presentations, and coordination meetings.
  • Assist with the preparation of cost estimates, schedules, and project budgets.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable codes, standards, and agency requirements.
  • Mentor junior staff and contribute to a collaborative team environment.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or related field.
  • 4–8 years of relevant experience in municipal engineering or public infrastructure projects.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license required.
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD Civil 3D and Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Strong understanding of municipal design standards and permitting processes.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
