We are seeking a highly experienced Senior Controller to lead and oversee key accounting and financial functions within a growing distribution business operating in a commodity-driven environment. This role will have significant responsibility for financial reporting, banking and lender relationships, working capital management, commodity hedging, and financial analysis. The ideal candidate is a hands-on financial leader who can operate effectively in a fast-paced environment, bring strong technical and analytical skills, and serve as a trusted business partner to ownership and senior management.
This individual will play a critical role in strengthening financial processes, managing risk, and supporting sound business decisions across the organization.
Key Responsibilities
- Own the monthly financial close process and ensure timely, accurate, and meaningful financial reporting.
- Prepare and manage monthly borrowing base reporting for the company's asset-based lending facility, including inventory and accounts receivable calculations.
- Maintain strong relationships with banking partners and serve as a key point of contact for lender communications and financial reporting requirements.
- Oversee the company's commodity hedging activities, working closely with outside hedging advisors and senior management to manage exposure and mitigate risk.
- Lead, manage, and develop the accounting and finance team, including establishing priorities, balancing workloads, setting performance expectations, and making staffing recommendations as appropriate.
- Analyze company-wide financial and operational performance to identify trends, risks, opportunities, and areas requiring management attention.
- Provide financial insight and recommendations to ownership and senior leadership to support strategic and operational decision-making.
- Identify potential financial and operational issues early, communicate their significance and urgency, and recommend appropriate courses of action.
- Partner with leadership to evaluate overhead, labor, and operating expenses and identify opportunities to improve efficiency and profitability.
- Strengthen financial controls, processes, and reporting capabilities as the business continues to grow.
- Support management with budgeting, forecasting, cash flow planning, and other financial analysis as needed.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field; CPA preferred.
- Prior experience as a Controller or Senior Controller, ideally within a commodity-driven, distribution, wholesale, or inventory-intensive business.
- Experience managing banking relationships and asset-based lending facilities, including borrowing base reporting.
- Strong understanding of inventory accounting, accounts receivable, working capital, and cash flow management.
- Familiarity with commodity hedging strategies; experience with precious metals or other commodity-based businesses strongly preferred.
- Demonstrated experience managing, developing, and leading an accounting or finance team.
- Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills with a high level of attention to detail.
- Excellent communication skills and the ability to clearly present financial information and business risks to ownership and senior leadership.
- Ability to operate as both a strategic financial partner and a hands-on leader in a growing organization.
- Strong judgment, accountability, and the ability to prioritize effectively in a dynamic business environment.
