Position DefinitionUnder the direction of the Fire Official, the Fire Prevention Specialist performs fire prevention and inspection activities in accordance with the New Jersey Uniform Fire Code and applicable state and local regulations [cite: 57]. Duties include conducting fire safety inspections and re‑inspections of commercial, industrial, and residential properties to ensure compliance with fire safety standards; investigating fires to determine origin and cause;
preparing reports and maintaining records; and performing other related duties as required [cite: 58, 59].
- Applicants must possess a valid New Jersey driver’s license [cite: 62].
- Possession of a valid New Jersey Fire Inspector Certification issued by the New Jersey Department of Community Affairs is required [cite: 63].
- Additional consideration will be given to applicants possessing Fire Official and Fire Investigator Certifications [cite: 64].
- Experience conducting fire inspections and investigations [cite: 64].
- Comprehensive knowledge of the New Jersey Uniform Fire Code and applicable fire safety regulations [cite: 65].
- Strong written and verbal communication skills [cite: 65].
- Ability to work independently and maintain professional relationships with the public and emergency services personnel [cite: 66].
- Residency is preferred [cite: 82].
Key Responsibilities
- Conducts fire safety inspections and re‑inspections to ensure compliance with the NJ Uniform Fire Code [cite: 71].
- Investigates fires to determine origin and cause [cite: 72].
- Prepares reports and maintains accurate records and files [cite: 73, 77].
- Reviews fire code compliance and issues notices when necessary [cite: 74].
- Responds to inquiries from residents, businesses, and emergency personnel [cite: 75].
- Attends court proceedings or hearings related to investigations, when required [cite: 76].
- Learns to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units [cite: 78].
- Performs other duties as assigned [cite: 79].
