Zoning Officer

ZONING OFFICER, FULL TIME – TOWNSHIP OF ROCKAWAY

The Township of Rockaway is currently seeking a qualified individual to serve as a Zoning Officer in the Department of Engineering, Planning, and Construction. The Zoning Officer’s responsibilities are to ensure that property owners are in compliance with local, county, and state zoning laws, ordinances, rules, and regulations.

• Consult with owners, contractors, and professionals on compliance issues
• Respond to phone calls and emails regarding zoning questions
• Conduct field inspections to ensure compliance with zoning regulations and applicable rules
• Initiate appropriate enforcement actions against violators
• Prepare discovery and attend court proceedings
• Prepare and process Zoning Request Forms, Complaint Forms, and Zoning Permit Applications
• Maintain essential records and files using computer software provided
• Perform related work as required, including work outside normal business hours when necessary

• Experience in a zoning-related field with inspection and enforcement of zoning and/or building construction laws and regulations
• Active Zoning Official Certificate issued by the Center for Government Services
• Knowledge of reading plans and surveys
• Experience with MLUL and SDL is helpful but not required
• Strong computer, written, and verbal communication skills
• Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and multitask
• Willingness to collaborate with other departments to assist with municipal code enforcement
• High school diploma or equivalent
• Ability to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate in English
