Responsibilities

Under general supervision and medical direction, perform respiratory care related procedures and exercise judgment within the physician’s treatment plan and departmental policies. Responsibilities include patient/family assessment and management, resource management, care facilitation, and discharge planning as required. Assess residents’ condition, administer prescribed therapy and aerosolized medications, observe and record progress and response to therapy, including adverse drug reactions. Provide in-service training to residents, family members, and facility staff.

Work with adult and geriatric populations, considering age-related development to tailor care. Involve appropriate parties in assessment, treatment, and continuing care as needed.

Initiate, monitor and maintain life support systems for residents in the skilled nursing facility. Perform airway care and maintenance. Manage artificial ventilator status as directed by an approved protocol. Maintain and troubleshoot mechanical ventilators. Participate in CPR procedures involving bag ventilation and chest compressions. Initiate, monitor and document performance of various respiratory care modalities. Assess residents’ cardiopulmonary status using clinical history, physical examination, labs, radiology studies, pulmonary function testing, and professional judgment to formulate respiratory care plans (orders from a physician).

Perform tasks prior to treating a resident as follows: check physician’s orders for completeness (diagnosis, ICD-10 code, type and duration of therapy, medication type and dosage, FiO2 and frequency); review chart history and precautions; observe and chart vital signs, respiration, breath sounds, and general condition; provide teaching on breathing exercises; inform supervisor of new starts and discontinuations. Administer proper respiratory care procedures and medications, adjust devices for optimal results, and document findings.

Communicate pertinent information to the resident’s nurse and maintain accurate charting.

Inspect and test equipment, disassemble/reassemble as required, maintain adequate supplies, and perform related administrative duties and record-keeping. Dispose of equipment properly. Assist in emergency CPR as part of the emergency team; CPR certification is required. Initiate, administer, evaluate response to, and document all therapy modalities per protocol and physician orders, including humidified therapy, nebulizers, chest PT, incentive spirometry, and related procedures.
