THE HARVEY

F. MORRELL, JR. SCHOLARSHIP: (Howell/Farmingdale Resident) The Optimist Club of Howell will award one (1) scholarship of $1,000. After serving in the U. S. Air Force, Harvey Morrell distinguished himself with a notable career as a police officer attaining the rank and title of the first Police Chief in the Township of Howell. He also served as Public Safety Director in the municipalities of Colts Neck and Allentown.

He was also the first elected Mayor of Howell Township, serving the residents of the town unselfishly.
It is hoped that the recipients of the “Morrell Scholarship” continue his legacy by serving their community and those who reside therein. Community Service, Love of Country and Honor were qualities inherent in Harvey Morrell and those qualities are what this scholarship winner possesses. In keeping with Harvey’s qualities and generous spirit, the applicant should have a commitment to others by demonstrating that they have been involved in community service

• Be a Howell/Farmingdale resident
• Be a graduating senior in good standing with a “B” average or higher
• Have applied to or been accepted to a college program leading to a career in law enforcement
• Have been involved in some form of community service

• Provide a descriptive statement outlining the chosen field of study, proposed school and reasons for vocational/professional choice. Limited to one (1) page, written by the student
• Two (2) letters of recommendation, one which addresses the student’s contributions to the community

Winners will be chosen by the Optimist Club of Howell Scholarship Committee from applications submitted through the student’s Guidance office. Monies will be paid directly to the school or vocational program the student will be attending to be applied directly toward the tuition costs.

All decisions of the Scholarship Committee are final.
