Overview

Under the support and supervision of a mentor, supervisor, or trainer, the Shop Tech Apprentice is responsible for the setup and operation of various machine shop equipment, including CNC HMCs, VMCs, multi‑axis turning centers, and manual machines, to produce products safely and efficiently while meeting operational requirements. The role includes documentation review, troubleshooting, continuous improvement, and component inspection.

Key Responsibilities
  • Become familiar with Lean Manufacturing concepts, GD&T practices, and interpretation of machine shop documentation.
  • Assist with coordinating, executing, documenting, and closing machine shop activities in a timely manner.
  • Learn setup and operation of machine shop equipment effectively, efficiently, safely, and consistently.
  • Read and interpret documents such as blueprints, operation/tool/set‑up sheets, routers, and procedures to produce conforming products on schedule.
  • Interpret graphs/data for problem solving, SPC, and monitoring performance metrics.
  • Set up and operate various CNC and manual machine shop equipment under direction as needed.
  • Review documentation and inspect material to ensure methods and tooling produce conforming product safely and efficiently.
  • Communicate issues to appropriate personnel.
  • Participate in component/material inspections using measuring equipment.
  • Perform and participate in troubleshooting activities to resolve issues and implement improvement recommendations.

Work Environment
  • Exposure to fluids, fumes, airborne particles, moving mechanical parts, noise, and vibration typical of manufacturing.
  • Interaction in both office and machine shop environments; use of standard office equipment and appropriate personal protective equipment.
  • Temperature may vary due to external conditions and machining processes.
  • No travel required.
Minimum

Required Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Vocational or technical school experience with precision machine shop equipment setup/operation (Aerospace concentration preferred).
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Computer literate with MS Office/PC experience.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen.
Physical Requirements
  • Regular communication and hearing.
  • Frequent reaching, handling, and touching.
  • Vision abilities including close, distance, peripheral, and depth perception.
  • Ability to stand for 7–8 hours daily, sit, walk, stoop, bend, turn, balance, and crouch.
  • Capacity to lift or move items up to 40 pounds.
  • Work schedule:

    4‑Day Work Week – Monday to Thursday (6:00 AM–4:30 PM).
Compensation & Benefits

Pay Rate: $21–26 per hour.
