We’re looking for a Safety Watcher in South Jersey to be a critical set of eyes on the jobsite. If you’re safety-minded, alert, and ready to help protect crews working around energized substations and switchyards, we want you on our team!

The Safety Watcher plays a critical role in maintaining a safe work environment on construction and modification projects within energized substations and switchyards. This position provides continuous site observation, identifies potential hazards, and helps ensure work is performed safely and in accordance with established safety procedures and project requirements.

The Safety Watcher serves as an important set of eyes on the jobsite, helping protect employees, equipment, and critical electrical infrastructure while work is being performed around energized systems.


POSITION SUMMARY:

The Non-NERC-CIP Safety Watcher is responsible for providing safety coverage at active construction sites that do not require NERC-CIP access. The position monitors site activities through routine visual observation, identifies unsafe conditions or behaviors, and takes appropriate action to address safety concerns. The Safety Watcher also verifies required personnel identification and credentials and works closely with contractors, project personnel, safety personnel, and security personnel to support safe and authorized site operations.


POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES:

Site Safety Monitoring

  • Provide safety coverage at assigned active construction sites.
  • Conduct routine visual observations of personnel, work activities, and site conditions.
  • Identify unsafe conditions, behaviors, practices, or activities.
  • Promptly communicate identified safety concerns to the appropriate personnel.
  • Intervene when appropriate to prevent or address unsafe activities.
  • Exercise Stop the Job authority when an identified condition warrants immediate intervention.
  • Support contractors and project personnel in maintaining a safe work environment.
  • Monitor site activities for compliance with applicable site safety requirements.
  • Maintain a visible and active safety presence at assigned sites.

Personnel and Credential Verification

  • Verify required identification, safety, security, and access badges for personnel working at the site.
  • Request contractor personnel to produce ISNetworld (ISN) badges upon mobilization, during tailboards and similar meetings, and as necessary throughout site activities.
  • Scan ISN badges using the ISN mobile application to verify badge validity and applicable worker qualifications.
  • Request and verify applicable PSE&G Background Check Verification Cards (BCVCs).
  • Coordinate with contractors, project teams, safety teams, and security personnel to resolve credentialing issues.
  • Escort personnel when required while credentialing or access issues are being resolved.
  • Escalate unresolved credentialing or authorization concerns.

Safety Intervention and Escalation

  • Take appropriate action when unsafe conditions or activities are observed.
  • Communicate safety concerns clearly and promptly.
  • Stop work when conditions present an unacceptable safety or security concern, consistent with applicable procedures and authority.
  • Notify the appropriate contractor, project, or safety representative of significant safety concerns.
  • Assist in resolving identified safety issues before work resumes when appropriate.

Communication and Coordination

  • Maintain effective communication with contractor personnel and project representatives.
  • Coordinate with applicable safety and project teams regarding site conditions and concerns.
  • Participate in tailboards, meetings, and other site activities as appropriate.
  • Maintain professional and respectful relationships with site personnel.


REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
:

  • High School Diploma, or equivalent
  • Two years of full-time and consistent work experience
  • Experience working in a safety or security environment


PREFERRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
:

  • OSHA 30 Hour Construction or General Industry
  • NCS First Aid/CPR/AED Certification
  • Construction Industry Experience
  • Knowledge/general understanding of OSHA 1910 and 1926 regulations


KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES
:

  • Basic computer skills.
  • Ability to observe and identify potentially unsafe conditions and behaviors.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment when responding to safety concerns.
  • Ability to communicate safety concerns clearly and professionally.
  • Strong situational awareness and attention to detail.
  • Ability to follow established safety and site procedures.
  • Ability to use a mobile device and applicable applications for credential verification.
  • Ability to work independently while maintaining communication with the appropriate project and safety personnel.
  • Ability and willingness to intervene when unsafe conditions are identified.


PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
