Duties

Major Duties:

  • Performs simple and routine maintenance and repair of grounds, exterior structures, buildings, equipment and related utilities.
  • Assists higher graded maintenance workers or tradesmen in the performance of their work.
  • Performs minor carpentry repairs using simple measures and hand tools on tasks such as replacing broken planks on picnic tables, broken window signs, minor adjustments or replacements of hinges, latches and catches.
  • Performs minor plumbing repairs such as tightening or replacing fittings and fixtures that do not require custom fitting or solder joints; replaces faucet washers, unplugs drains using a plunger; replaces liquid petroleum gas bottles.
  • Performs minor painting using brush and roller according to specific instructions on projects where appearances are not critical such as staining picnic tables and trash barrels.
Requirements

  • Appointment subject to background investigation and favorable adjudication.
  • Meet Selective Service Registration Act requirement for males.
  • Direct Deposit: Selectee will be required to participate in the Direct Deposit Electronics Funds Transfer Program.
  • You may be required to operate a government (or private) motor vehicle as part of your official duties. Prior to your first official motor vehicle operation, and again every year thereafter (or more frequently if management determines such need exists), you will be required to sign an affidavit certifying possession of a valid State‑issued driver’s license that is current and has not been revoked, suspended, canceled, or otherwise disqualified in any way.

    You will also submit a photocopy of your valid State‑issued driver’s license before first operation, and subsequently each year.
  • Government Housing is available.
  • Uniform:
    You will be required to wear a uniform and comply with the National Park Service uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided.
  • Government Charge Card:
    You may be required to complete training and obtain/maintain a government charge card with travel and/or purchase authority.
  • Applicants must be at least (1) 18 years old or (2) 16 years old and: (a) have graduated from high school or have an equivalent certificate; (b) completed a formal vocational training program; (c) received a statement from school authorities agreeing with their preference for employment rather than continuing education; or (d) be currently enrolled in a secondary school and either work only during school vacation periods or part‑time under a formal student employment program.
  • Able to lift 40 pounds.
Qualifications

All qualifications must be met by the closing date of this announcement—03/13/2026—unless otherwise stated. Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience. For current Federal employees, if hours worked per week are not included on your resume, you must submit a non‑award SF‑50 for each federal position listed to validate your work schedule. An award SF‑50 will not be acceptable documentation for crediting experience.

For other applicants, your resume must state either "full‑time" (or "40 hours a week") or "part‑time" with the number of hours worked per week.

For periods of military service, DD‑214 or Statement of Service is sufficient. In order to be qualified, you must possess the ability to do the work of the position with no more than normal supervision. Typical duties include providing daily custodial, grounds and general maintenance for various buildings, river accesses, waysides and interpretive trails; installing hinges on doors, replacing glass in windows, preparing surfaces for painting, replacing faucet washers, and replacing switches.

You must provide specific examples in your resume of how you meet the qualification listed above. Volunteer experience, including paid and unpaid service, is also considered.

Physical Demands

Works with ladders, scaffolds and platforms and requires standing, stooping, bending, kneeling, climbing and working in tiring and uncomfortable positions. Frequently lifts, carries and operates equipment weighing up to 40 pounds.
