Under general supervision, the Tractor Operator operates a diesel or gasoline powered tractor and associated equipment to perform grounds maintenance operations including cutting grass in landscaped and non-landscaped areas of commercial and public grounds. This job class requires practical skill and knowledge of grounds keeping practices, equipment, and using safe work practices.

Typical duties include operating a tractor to move materials, drawing implements, towing trailers, and pulling objects embedded in ground; pulling cable of winch to raise, lower, or load heavy material or equipment; fastening attachments such as graders, plows, rollers, mowers, backhoes, seeders or disc harrows to tractor; monitoring and reviewing equipment, structures, materials, events, and environment to detect and assess problems;

adhering to procedures, regulations and guidelines while minimizing errors and safety risks; lubricating and making minor repairs to tractor and attachments; inspecting tractors and equipment per company requirements to ensure proper operation and safe condition; performing grounds maintenance laborer duties where required; and performing other duties and special projects as assigned.

Minimum qualifications include one or more years of experience in operating tractors or similar heavy equipment; ability to follow verbal and written directions and instructions; ability to follow established safety rules applicable to tractor operators, to maintain a safe environment, and to adapt and respond to potentially hazardous conditions and use the appropriate PPE; flexibility to adapt to changing work priorities, and to build effective working relationships with coworkers and customers;

and demonstrated organizational, problem-solving and common sense skills.

Physical requirements include the ability to maneuver over uneven ground, maneuver in, around, and on equipment, climb and work from high platforms, reach, push, and pull gears to operate levers and steering wheel, bend, stoop, and reach, and lift or move tools, equipment and/or materials up to 50 pounds.

Work environment includes performing work at a customer's location on job sites in a construction environment with various tools, and mechanical, electrical and construction equipment. Transporting to work locations within the site. At times, may be required to work in confined spaces. Employees may be exposed to hazardous equipment, toxic substances, noise from equipment, and depending on external weather conditions, wind, rain, cold, and heat.

Travel between facilities and work locations may be required.
