Job Summary

The Scientist/Engineer, Corrosion is responsible for the development, validation and application of corrosion techniques to support research within the Arconic Technology Center (ATC) and plant operations. This role will also serve as a subject matter expert and technical resource in corrosion science and engineering.

Responsibilities
  • Provide leadership and expertise in corrosion science and engineering to support alloy development projects in ATC, troubleshoot corrosion issues across Arconic plants and train plant engineering personnel.
  • Partner with aluminum alloy metallurgists to develop the next generation of high-performance alloys
  • Evaluate and develop a mechanistic understanding of aluminum corrosion performance in various applications and environments
  • Develop and implement laboratory-scale accelerated corrosion tests and correlate to outdoor/real world findings.
  • Guide technicians on best practices for collecting test materials, coupons, coatings, weld joints, and components for corrosion testing.
  • Support the development of product design guidance and qualification requirements for corrosion performance.
  • Lead gauge R&R studies, statistical assessments, and data interpretation of different corrosion tests. Ensure timely reporting of quality metrics.
  • Build and deploy corrosion models based on first principles for existing and new processes.
  • Support ongoing efforts to understand effects of pretreatments for bond durability on corrosion performance of alloys.
  • Scout and deploy new corrosion assessment methodologies and capabilities in support of emerging projects of business interest to Arconic and customers.
  • Deploy viable schemes for benchmarking corrosion performance of Arconic alloys against competitor materials.
  • Evaluate and communicate the economic benefit of corrosion related support activities.
  • Operate safely in the corrosion laboratory with high standards. Maintain equipment and supporting documents and actively work to streamline existing laboratory workflows.
  • Develop and capture new intellectual property in the form of trade secrets and/or patents to support Arconic businesses.
Qualifications
  • PhD in Materials Science/Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry or related discipline with demonstrated experience applying corrosion science and engineering in an academia, government laboratory, or manufacturing plant environment.
  • Knowledge and hands-on expertise in corrosion testing, surface analysis, failure analysis, fractography, electrochemistry.
  • Demonstrated understanding of core principles of experimental design in corrosion engineering and technical project execution with record of scientific publication in peer-reviewed journals.
  • Experience operating and/or interpreting data from material characterization techniques such as optical microscopy, electron microscopy, x-ray microanalysis, x-ray diffraction and electron back scatter diffraction.
  • Legally authorized to work in the United States. Verification of employment eligibility will be required at the time of hire. Visa sponsorship is not available for this position.
  • This position requires access to controlled technology, as defined in the Export Administration Regulations (15 C.F.R. 730, et seq.) and/or the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR). Authorizations from the relevant government agency may be required to meet export control compliance requirements.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Knowledge of aluminum value chain production processes (e.g., casting, extrusion, rolling, alloying)
  • Familiarity with corrosion test standards of relevance to the aluminum industry (e.g., G69, G110)
  • Proven experience in designing testing protocol and interpreting corrosion information from accelerated laboratory testing and outdoor exposure testing.
  • Experience working in a laboratory with corrosion test setups including salt spray and alternate immersion.
  • Experience with multiphysics modeling (COMSOL) and statistical data analysis (Excel, Minitab, Matlab, Power BI, etc.) platforms.
  • Strong technical acumen with aptitude for continuous learning and problem solving.
  • Ability to manage and prioritize multiple requests.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.
  • Strong attention to detail with problem-solving mindset.
  • Strong collaboration skills and comfortable working in a team environment
  • Self-starter with ability to execute on technical projects with minimal supervisory authority
