Motive Workforce is seeking a Director of Engineering, Battery Pack Systems for a leading battery technology company focused on the design, development, and manufacturing of lithium-ion battery solutions for motive and stationary energy storage applications. This leadership role is responsible for setting the technical vision and directing the engineering organization responsible for battery pack design and development. The Director of Engineering will lead multidisciplinary engineering teams through every phase of product development, from concept through manufacturing launch, while serving as a key technical leader for customers, executive leadership, and cross-functional teams.
The ideal candidate combines deep battery pack engineering expertise, whether from a mechanical or electrical engineering background, with proven experience leading high-performing engineering organizations.
Responsibilities
- Set and drive the engineering strategy for battery pack programs while aligning technical execution with business objectives.
- Build, mentor, and lead cross-disciplinary engineering teams including mechanical, electrical, and systems engineers.
- Oversee the design, development, and validation of lithium-ion battery packs and modules across multiple industries and applications.
- Collaborate with program management, procurement, manufacturing, thermal and mechanical engineering, electrical and BMS teams, and software engineering to deliver integrated battery solutions.
- Represent engineering in technical discussions with customers, suppliers, and executive leadership, including design reviews and technical presentations.
- Guide technology roadmaps by evaluating emerging battery technologies, materials, manufacturing methods, and regulatory requirements.
- Ensure battery designs comply with applicable industry standards and safety requirements, including UL, ISO, SAE, and IEC.
- Identify technical risks, develop mitigation strategies, and lead engineering through evolving program requirements and organizational change.
- Oversee engineering documentation, including BOMs, assembly procedures, installation guides, and design documentation.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related engineering discipline required. Master's degree or PhD preferred.
- 10+ years of engineering experience with a strong focus on lithium-ion battery pack systems or closely related technologies.
- 5+ years of engineering leadership or management experience, including building and developing technical teams.
- Demonstrated experience leading the design, development, testing, and launch of battery systems for electrified propulsion or stationary energy storage applications.
- Deep understanding of battery pack architecture, system integration, mechanical design, electrical systems, thermal management, and Battery Management Systems (BMS).
- Experience with engineering tools such as CATIA, Solid Works, or comparable CAD platforms, along with electrical design and analysis tools.
- Working knowledge of battery certification requirements and regulatory standards, including UL, IEC, ISO, and SAE.
- Strong leadership, communication, and presentation skills with experience engaging executives, customers, and cross-functional engineering teams.
- Proven ability to manage technical risk, competing priorities, and multiple development programs.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with BMS software and control algorithms.
- Advanced thermal or mechanical battery pack design experience.
- Background in battery modeling, simulation, or advanced battery testing.
- Project or program management certification or equivalent experience.
