Position
Description:
New London Public Schools is seeking a qualified and dedicated Teacher of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing to provide direct instruction and support services to students who are deaf or hard of hearing. The successful candidate will work collaboratively with general education and special education staff to ensure students have full access to curriculum and instruction while supporting academic, language, and social-emotional development.
Duties and Responsibilities:
* Provide individualized instruction to students who are deaf or hard of hearing
* Collaborate with classroom teachers, specialists, and families to support student access and learning
* Adapt and modify instructional materials to ensure accessibility across content areas
* Utilize appropriate communication methods (e.g., ASL, spoken language, cued speech, written communication) based on student needs
* Monitor and document student progress and adjust instruction accordingly
* Participate in PPT/IEP meetings and contribute to the development and implementation of IEPs
* Supervise and provide direction to assigned paraprofessionals and volunteers
* Maintain current knowledge of best practices in deaf education and inclusive instruction
* Perform other duties as assigned by administration
Required Certification:
* Valid Connecticut teaching certification:
* 057 - Comprehensive Special Education or
* 058 - Teaching Students who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing
Qualifications:
* Ability to work effectively with students, families, and staff in diverse educational settings
Preferred Qualifications:
* Bilingual in English and Spanish
* Experience in inclusive and/or multilingual educational environments
* Proficiency in American Sign Language (ASL) or other communication methods used by students
