Overview

The Department of Human Development invites applications for a one‑year visiting assistant professor in Human Development beginning July 1, 2025. The ideal candidate is an excellent teacher who enjoys working closely with students in a liberal arts context. The primary focus will be Early Childhood and Adolescent Development, with a broad emphasis on how sociocultural, environmental, and biological contexts influence human development.

Teaching

Responsibilities

Teaching load: 3/3, for a total of six courses during the academic year. The new hire will design and teach a first‑year seminar on a topic of their choice and expertise, teach several sections of Introduction to Human Development, and teach two to three additional courses required by our majors and minors. Potential courses include Individual Differences in Human Development, Children in Learning Environments, and Adolescent Development.

Qualifications

Applicants should hold a Ph.D. in Human Development, Psychology, or a related discipline that includes interdisciplinary areas such as cultural, critical, developmental, social or clinical work. The candidate’s research should align with the early childhood and adolescent development focus described above.

Early Childhood/Adolescent Expertise
  • Examining sociocultural practices and learning environments shaping socioemotional and/or cognitive development
  • Studying self‑development and identity in early childhood and adolescence
  • Investigating the impact of cultural and social practices on peer relationships, family, community, and educational or biological outcomes
Lab School Engagement

The Connecticut College Child Development Lab School, integrated with the Human Development Department, offers a laboratory setting for student placements. The program serves roughly 90 children and their families from New London County each year, providing an applied context for the concepts taught.
