Description

The U.S. Coast Guard Academy Marine Science Department invites applications for a Lecturer in Marine Science. The desired start date is August 10, 2026.

This will be an appointment in the excepted service to a full‑time position on the academic faculty for a period not to exceed August 21, 2027. Non‑competitive extensions past the initial contract period may be made in accordance with government instructions if a vacancy exists. The first two years of appointment to federal service is a trial period.

The work schedule is full-time. This position is not eligible for telework and not eligible for remote work. All teaching is done in person. Relocation expenses are not authorized. Travel is not required.

Salary offers may be made outside of the listed range for exceptional candidates.

Duties and Responsibilities

The successful candidate will teach marine science courses and laboratories in Marine and Atmospheric Sciences, Oceanography, Marine Biology, or Geospatial Sciences. The teaching load will be 9–15 contact hours per semester during the school year. The selectee may also be required to supervise cadet‑directed studies projects in marine and environmental sciences fields and participate in leadership and professional development activities with students outside of class.

Over the summer, the selectee will perform institutional assessment, course preparations for the following year, support evaluation of incoming students, and other duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Master’s degree in Oceanography, Marine Science, Geospatial Sciences, Applied Sciences, Ocean/Environmental Engineering, or related degree.
  • Preferred Qualifications
  • Candidates should possess an ability to teach undergraduate courses in marine science, atmospheric sciences, oceanography, marine biology, geospatial sciences, and/or data visualization.
  • Should have previous experience teaching and mentoring undergraduate students.
  • Teamwork skills, the ability to demonstrate initiative, and the ability to be adaptable in the context of a student‑centered institution are very desirable.
  • Interpersonal, teaching and effective written and oral communication skills are essential.
  • A record of scholarship and publication in related fields is desirable.
