Duties

You will operate floating and all-terrain hydraulic boom Category 1 cranes for critical lifts involving submerged loads, ship equipment, and weaponry. You will perform precision positioning of sensitive materials, including radioactive components, ammunition, and torpedoes, often communicating by hand signal or radio. You will operate a variety of heavy equipment, such as loaders, backhoes, and vacuum trucks, to support public works maintenance projects like excavation and snow removal.

You will lift large, geometrically complex loads that may require the use of more than one crane operating near maximum capacity. You will perform routine maintenance on all operated equipment, including cleaning, fueling, oiling, and replacing wire rope to ensure it remains in safe, clean condition.

Qualifications

Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most trade and labor occupations, you must show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which you are applying. Qualification requirements emphasis is on quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time.

This job has a screen-out element which will be used to determine minimum eligibility for this job. Applicants who do not receive a minimum of two points on the screen-out element(s) will be found ineligible.

The Screen-out Element for this position is:

  • Operating hydraulic cranes and/or floating cranes to lift and move loads where maneuverability is not a major factor;
  • Estimating the weight of loads;
  • Executing routine lifts and standard maneuvers in accordance with commercially accepted safe rigging practices and in compliance with OSHA requirements;
  • Working with a lifting team using standard hand signals for crane operations;
  • Performing operator inspections of cranes and related equipment;
  • Performing rigging functions, such as selecting and attaching rigging gear and guiding crane lifts.
