Hogan Sports Center at Colby-Sawyer College is seeking an Assistant Director for the Summer Recreation Day Camp.
The Hogan Sports Center Recreation Day Camp is an 8-week program that serves children entering Kindergarten through 6th grade. Campers are divided into six groups according to grade in school. The camper to counselor ratio is 10:1. All activities take place on the Colby-Sawyer campus in the two gymnasium facilities and outdoor field space. The camp staff includes a Director, Assistant Director and 15-18 responsible high school and young adult staff.
The camp offers sports, creative arts and crafts, swimming, recreational games and weekly field trips.
The Recreation Day Camp Assistant Director is a summer-only position and will be 40 hours per week, Monday-Friday from June 22-August 14, 2026, while camp is in session, with an additional 40 hours, approximately, between May 18-June 22, 2026, for camp preparation. The Assistant Camp Director is responsible for assisting the Camp Director with the day-to-day operations of the camp ensuring the care and safety of participants and camp staff.
They will also provide supervision and guidance to the camp staff to ensure their activity planning, implementation and camper supervision is consistently meeting and exceeding expectations.
Responsibilities
- Serve the campers and staff as a positive role model
- Assist in designing and leading staff training
- Assist in supervising, guiding, supporting and evaluating camp staff
- Oversight of daily operations in the absence of the Director
- Demonstrate sound judgement and establish a nurturing atmosphere in which campers and staff feel safe, engaged and included
- Communicate with all campers, staff and parents in a positive and respectful manner
- Address camper and staff behavioral issues in a professional and respectful manner
- Maintain accurate daily attendance records
- Create, maintain and track weekly staff assignments and schedules
- Assist staff in creating and implementing engaging and age-appropriate daily activities
- Assist with field trip planning, implementation and supervision
- Maintain cleanliness and safety of all facilities, equipment and supplies that are used by the program
- Other duties as assigned in a fast-paced collaborative environment that requires flexibility and the ability to lend a hand wherever needed.
- Must be at least 21 years old
- Genuinely enjoy being around children and young adults
- Experience working in an after school, camp, recreation or school setting
- Experience providing supervision and guidance to members of staff
- Experience planning and scheduling age-appropriate activities and programs for children 5-12
- Experience addressing behavioral issues with children, parents and staff in a confidential and respectful manner using positive behavioral management techniques
- Organized and detail oriented with the ability to work independently
- Ability to build positive and respectful relationships with campers and staff
- Ability to communicate clearly to campers, staff and parents
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
