Overview

The Sterile Processing Advanced Technician is a medical professional who reports to the Sterile Processing Supervisor. This technician specializes in the decontamination, assembly and sterilization of surgical instruments for the Operating Room as well as the clinics within the hospital and our offsite Newport location. The Advanced Technician will also clean and process Endoscopes according to hospital policies and procedures, following all manufacturer IFUs.

Applies his or her knowledge daily by acting as a resource for fellow team members and other departments. The Technician will take Charge Duty when the Supervisor is away and carry out the daily duties of the supervisor when they are not in the building. This technician will help train new employees and will work with the Supervisor to ensure the department is stocked with trays and supplies and that updates are communicated to the appropriate person/department.

Responsibilities
  • Take charge duty when the Supervisor is off for the day or on vacation and carry out Supervisor duties while the Supervisor is not in the building
  • Attend weekly huddles or other meetings that may come up if the Supervisor cannot attend
  • Order any supplies that may be needed if the Supervisor is off and not able to do so
  • Ensure trauma sets needing restock are stocked with implants coming in
  • Communicate with Facilities for department issues
  • Leave updates through email to the Supervisor on equipment or supply issues
  • Coordinate trays with Reps regarding inbound/outbound items
  • Assist Supervisor in training new hires or travelers
  • Notify the OR if an instrument is missing after a case
  • Assist with editing set write-ups as needed
  • Follow manufacturer instructions for steam and low-temperature sterilization
  • Follow manufacturer instructions for decontamination and disinfection of instruments and flexible endoscopes
  • Demonstrate knowledge of surgical instrument kits and proper inspection/assembly
  • Adhere to hospital CSR policies and AAMI guidelines
  • Perform equipment testing (Bowies and Biologicals) and report abnormal results
  • Deliver sterile instruments and kits promptly within the hospital
  • Maintain a clean work environment per regulator guidelines and hospital policy
  • Attend staff meetings and training
  • Stay current on departmental communications and required competencies
  • Participate in orientation of new staff as needed
  • Complete other daily tasks as assigned
  • Respond to phone messages as needed
  • Support reps with trays as needed and assist with tray handling
  • Assist the OR when looking for a kit or instrument
Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED
  • Central Sterile certification required within two years of hire (to be obtained through CBSPD)
Required Certifications
  • Certified Sterile Processing and Distribution Technician (CSPDT) OR Certified Surgical Instrument Specialist (CSIS) OR Certified Sterile Processing Manager (CSPM) OR Certified Ambulatory Surgery Sterile Processing Technician (CASSPT) OR Certified Flexible Endoscope Reprocessor (CFER) OR Certified Registered Central Service Technician (CRCST) OR Certified Endoscope Reprocessor (CER) OR Certified Instrument Specialist (CIS) OR Certified Healthcare Leader (CHL) within 365 days
