Overview

The Superintendent of Substations is responsible for day‑to‑day field leadership, coordination, and execution of substation construction activities for utility‑scale solar and energy infrastructure projects. This role ensures that work is performed safely, on schedule, within budget, and in compliance with project specifications, company standards, and regulatory requirements. The Superintendent serves as the primary on‑site leader for substation crews and subcontractors, translating project plans into safe, high‑quality field execution while maintaining strong communication with project management, engineering, and safety teams.

Supervisory

Responsibilities

The Superintendent of Substations provides day‑to‑day leadership and supervision of Substation Foremen, field crews, and subcontractors. This role is responsible for coordinating work activities, reinforcing safety and quality standards, and providing ongoing coaching and performance feedback to support effective field execution.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities
  • Support the Conductor Power Safety program.
  • Provide on‑site leadership for all substation construction activities, including civil, structural, electrical, grounding, protection and control, and commissioning support.
  • Plan, coordinate, and supervise daily work activities for internal crews and subcontractors to meet project schedules and milestones.
  • Enforce all safety policies, OSHA requirements, and company safety standards; lead daily tailgate meetings and actively promote a strong safety culture.
  • Review construction drawings, specifications, and work plans to ensure accurate execution and alignment with engineering intent.
  • Coordinate with Project Managers, Engineers, Safety, Quality, and Procurement teams to resolve field issues and maintain workflow.
  • Track progress against the schedule and proactively identify risks, delays, or resource constraints; recommend and implement corrective actions.
  • Ensure work is performed in compliance with applicable codes and standards, including NEC, NESC, utility standards, and project‑specific requirements.
  • Review Bill of Materials and support development of overall materials, equipment and manpower needed to perform the tasks.
  • Oversee material deliveries, equipment usage, and site logistics to support efficient field operations.
  • Maintain accurate field documentation, including daily reports, manpower tracking, safety documentation, and quality records.
  • Participate in inspections, testing, and commissioning activities as required, support punch list completion and project closeout.
  • Mentor and develop field leadership, including foremen and lead personnel, to build strong, capable substation teams.
  • Serve as a professional representative of the company with clients, inspectors, utility representatives, and other stakeholders on site.
  • Develop, review, maintain and revise Standard Work Instructions (SWI).

Requirements
  • Extensive knowledge of substation construction methods, materials, and sequencing.
  • Strong understanding of electrical safety, lockout/tagout procedures, grounding, and energized work protocols.
  • Ability to read and interpret construction drawings, one‑lines, wiring diagrams, and technical specifications.
  • Proven leadership skills with the ability to manage multiple crews and priorities in a fast‑paced construction environment.
  • Strong communication and problem‑solving skills, with the ability to collaborate across disciplines.
  • Working knowledge of construction schedules, cost controls, and productivity tracking.
  • Proficiency with basic construction technology (email, mobile reporting tools, project management platforms).
Education And Experience
  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Minimum of 8–10 years of experience in substation or heavy electrical construction, including progressive field leadership experience.
  • Prior experience as a Substation Foreman or Lead Superintendent strongly preferred.
  • Experience on utility‑scale solar, renewable energy, or transmission/distribution projects preferred.
  • OSHA 30‑Hour Construction Certification (required or obtained within a defined timeframe).
  • First Aid/CPR certification.
  • Valid driver’s license with the ability to travel to project sites as required.
