Why does the job exist?

Assists the Project Manager to ensure that all highway and bridge construction projects are completed and comply with the NM Department of Transportation (NMDOT) Specifications, NMDOT Standard Drawings, Technical Training Certification Program (TTCP) Certifications, Project Plans, Project Contracts, and Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) Code of Federal Regulations (CFR). To assign job duties to crew personnel and to provide direct supervision to crew members.

Perform employee evaluations as required.

How does it get done?

Supervise subordinates and contractors on roadway and bridge construction projects ensuring materials meet specifications, and ensure all quantities are completed before the estimate cut-off date. Have the ability and knowledge to assist the Project Manager and Office Manager with change orders and monthly estimates. Also, provide weekly traffic reports.

The traveling public and pedestrians.

Ideal Candidate
  • Assist Staff Manager in managing and administering roadway construction and maintenance projects
  • Document work activities, prepare project personnel daily report; document: contractor and inspector activities, construction and safety issues, conversations with contractor and property owners, weather conditions, and any other issue necessary using Site Manager
  • Supervise assigned Civil Engineer Technicians, schedule, assign, and check work activities; monitor and evaluate work performance; assist in interviewing and hiring applicants, make recommendations on crew personnel actions; mentor employees on work performance and professional development.
  • Administer contractor payments
    ¿ ensure: pay items are reported in timely manner, no items are paid during the reporting period without proper materials certification, all required materials certifications are in the project files by the date of the final inspection or have documented exceptions on file, project documentation and change orders are completed so the final estimate package is submitted to the District Audit Section within 60 calendar days of the final inspection with any exception to be documented in the transmittal letter.
  • Ensure compliance with the project contracts, plans, standard specifications for Highway and Bridge Construction, Federal minimum guidelines and standard serial drawings and to construct a quality and safe roadway system for the traveling public. Provide technical assistance in developing project change orders.

High School Diploma or equivalent and ten (10) years of relevant experience, six (6) months of which must be supervisory or senior level experience managing projects or assignments. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling ten (10) years may substitute for the required experience.

Employment Requirements

Must possess and maintain a valid Driver's License. Employment requires successful completion of post offer pre-employment physical exam and is conditional pending results. Business/Personal Reference check and Driver's License verification are required and employment is conditional pending results.

Working Conditions

Work is performed in office/field in varying weather conditions including heat, cold, humidity, wind, rain, and snow. May include exposure to: ' Sunlight, dust, pollen, chemicals, rough/rugged terrain, insects and reptiles, noxious plants and infected trash; exposure to ' Moving mechanical parts, high precarious places, toxic fumes/chemicals and/or airborne particles, hazardous chemicals and/or asphalt and petroleum products; ' Highway speed/high volume traffic and loud noises;

' Falls and bruises, considerable physical strain; ' Heavy lifting; sitting/standing, bending, squatting, climbing, reaching, kneeling and crawling for extended periods of time may be required. Must have the ability to lift up to 50 pounds. Work may also include being performed in an office setting with exposure to visual/Video Display Terminal (VDT) and extensive personal computer and telephone usage to include working with faxes, copiers and printers.

May be required to work irregular hours or emergencies on short notice; willingness to accept change or geographical assignments; interaction with the public, local, county schools and city officials by phone and in person. Possibility of geographic location change.
