Responsibilities
- Cleans, restores, extracts, and replaces teeth using rotary and hand instruments, dental appliances, medications, and surgical equipment.
- Treats soft and hard tissue diseases of the oral cavity; performs surgery on oral tissues when necessary; renders prosthetic treatment when approved and indicated; designs and places orthodontic devices to correct minor malocclusions and renders all dental services to restore oral health.
- Provides comprehensive dental treatment in a hospital operating room setting.
- Provides preventive dental services, such as applications of fluoride and sealants, and delivers education on oral health and dental hygiene.
- Provides treatment in a clinical setting using behavior management techniques.
- Provides treatment in a clinical setting using oral conscious sedation (if provider holds an OCS permit).
- Reviews the patient’s health history and is fully aware of any unusual or severely complex medical conditions, diagnoses, and required treatments, entering them into patient charts.
- Works closely with medical colleagues to develop treatment plans or modalities for medically complex patients.
- Consults with patients, advises them of their dental status, prescribes required treatment, explains risks and alternatives, documents per department, company, state, and federal guidelines, and includes patient financial responsibilities.
- Instructs, supervises, and signs the charts of up to six or more pediatric dental residents per day (up to 30–40 patients daily).
- Participates in quality improvement activities and in professional activities that define the delivery of dental health care services.
- Ensures high‑quality care within the Dental Department is delivered in a caring, patient‑centered, and efficient manner.
- Able to work both independently and in a team environment.
- Able to handle multiple tasks and priorities.
- Must have up‑to‑date knowledge of legal and ethical standards for delivery of dental care.
- Must have up‑to‑date knowledge of relevant drugs and non‑pharmaceutical patient‑care aids and the ability to prescribe dosages and instruct patients or parents on correct usage.
- Must possess an OCS permit if treatment using oral conscious sedation is performed.
- Must maintain Continuing Education Units (CEUs) required for license renewal.
- Must maintain current pediatric dentistry credentials and be able to serve as a faculty appointment holder with the Pediatric Dental Residency Program.
- Reports to and meets with the Associate Program Director/Dental Director of San Diego Children’s Dental Clinic (SDCDC) on a regular basis.
- Maintains employment with SY Health and holds a faculty appointment with the educational partners for the Pediatric Dental Residency Program.
- Attends SY Health dental department meetings (when available) and monthly meetings after hours.
