Job Description

Under the supervision of the principal, the Secondary teacher will provide guidance and instructional experiences that are academically and developmentally appropriate for each student assigned to that classroom as well as other programs as assigned.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Accurately demonstrate knowledge of the content area, approved curriculum and pedagogical skills.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of students, their interests, cultural heritage, and special needs.
  • Set instructional outcomes that are suitable for diverse students, reflecting value, sequence, alignment, clarity and balance.
  • Design coherent instruction including learning activities, instructional materials, resources and lesson & unit structure.
  • Design student assessments that are congruent with instructional outcomes and/or formative assessments.
  • Create an environment of respect and rapport; interact with students by words and actions.
  • Establish a culture of learning, including expectations for learning and achievement.
  • Manage classroom procedures: instruction groups, transitions, materials, supplies, and routine performance.
  • Manage student behavior: expectations, monitoring, and response to misbehavior.
  • Organize physical space: safety, accessibility, furniture arrangement and use of resources.
  • Communicate with families about the instructional program, individual students and family engagement.
  • Communicate with students: expectations, activity directions and content explanations.
  • Use questioning and discussion techniques to enhance participation.
  • Engage students: groupings, structure and pacing.
  • Use assessment in instruction: monitor learning, give feedback, student self‑assessment, and monitor progress.
  • Utilize student assessment techniques and procedures.
  • Collaborate productively with colleagues, parents, community members, and administration.
  • Follow district policies and administrative rules.
  • Take precautions to protect equipment, materials, and facilities.
  • Maintain accurate and complete records; report progress or lack thereof to parents timely.
  • Participate in faculty meetings.
  • Prepare adequate materials for a substitute teacher.
  • Apply appropriate conflict resolution skills.
  • Demonstrate public relations skills.
  • Use diagnostic data to improve instructional programs.
  • Select, use, and interpret evaluation data.
  • Be available to parents, students, administration, and peers outside school hours if needed.
  • Report suspected child abuse and neglect.
  • Be responsible for students on field trips.
  • Act as a good role model within the school context.
  • Understand and apply learning theories.
  • Participate in the development, use, and implementation of individualized education plans and related plans; prepare data, grades and relevant information for team decision‑making.
  • Account for assigned equipment and materials; provide inventory to principal.
  • Serve as a member of the SAT as needed.
  • Report unsafe or dangerous surfaces and conditions.
  • Maintain security for and administer state‑required assessments.
  • Maintain confidentiality with sensitive matters.
  • Be flexible and able to prioritize tasks.
  • Report to work on time; work no less than 7.25 hours per day.
  • Deescalate students/parents; listen/visit concerns prior to meetings with administrators.
  • Perform any other tasks deemed appropriate by the principal.
Supervisory Responsibilities

May supervise educational assistants, practicum students, student teachers, and high school civic leadership.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree.
  • Current New Mexico Teaching license with endorsements appropriate for the position applying.
Physical Requirements

Sitting, standing, lifting and carrying up to 40 pounds, climbing stairs, reaching, squatting, kneeling, full mobility of fingers/hands, and moving light furniture. ADA accommodations may be considered if no undue hardship.

Safety and Health

Knowledge of universal hygiene precautions (blood‑borne pathogens, body fluids, etc.).

Equipment/Material Handled

Must know how to properly operate or be willing to learn to operate multi‑media equipment and current technology as needed.

Work Environment

Must work within various degrees of noise and temperature; interruptions are routine. Requires flexibility, patience, self‑motivation, and ability to complete assignments without direct supervision. After‑hours work may be required; occasional site visits and stressful conditions are possible.

Terms of Employment

Salary and work year to be established by the Board.
