New Mexico Public Educational Department Licensure (NM PED) – This position requires licenses from NM PED. Licensure fees will be paid by the applicant using credit or debit card; $50.00 if both licenses are applied for simultaneously or $100.00 if applied separately. Los Alamos Public Schools Human Resources will provide all information needed to apply.

Summary

Under general supervision, provide responsible assistance in the preparation of materials for educational instructors; set up materials and demonstrations for classroom lectures; provide assistance to, and tutor, students in an assigned area; perform clerical duties for assigned instructor; and perform a variety of tasks relative to the assigned area of responsibility.

Essential Functions

  • Provide assistance in the preparation of materials for educational instructors; set up demonstrations, materials, and equipment for classroom lectures; promote a positive learning environment.
  • Provide tutoring and other assistance to students in a variety of areas; interpret and explain detailed instructions; monitor student progress and report to instructors.
  • Assist the teacher in evaluating students; assist in preparing teaching materials and learning activities, as directed; proofread and mark student papers; provide updates on student progress.
  • Review student assignments, correct homework; as directed, administer tests to students to complete lesson plans.
  • Oversee classroom activities in the absence of an instructor and during recess, lunch and other special events; assist in maintaining classroom and school disciplinary procedures.
  • Perform record keeping activities; take attendance and maintain attendance records; fill out forms and applications as required.
  • Respond to various questions and inquiries from students and parents on routine issues; refer students to instructors for complex questions and issues.
  • Design, implement and maintain instructional and informational materials; tutor students in the creation of project materials and reports.
  • Perform a variety of clerical tasks supporting assigned instructor; take roll call and keep student attendance records; duplicate materials; assemble notebooks and handouts; return reviewed homework assignments, reports and tests to students.
  • Perform custodial duties in the classroom to maintain a clean and safe environment; clean desks, tables and chairs; set up and assemble materials for projects.
  • Operate a variety of office equipment including a computer, copier, fax or other equipment.
  • Follow all safety rules and procedures established for work area.
  • Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.
Qualifications

Knowledge of:

  • Operations, services and activities of an instructional program.
  • Student instructional and tutorial techniques.
  • Principles and concepts of assigned academic subject matter.
  • Modern office practices, procedures and equipment including computers and supporting word processing and spreadsheet applications.
  • Theories and concepts of early childhood development.
  • Methods and techniques used in assessing student programs.
  • General goals and purpose of education programs.
  • Discipline strategies.
  • Principles and procedures of record keeping.
  • English usage, spelling, grammar, and punctuation.
  • Pertinent federal, state, and local codes, laws and regulations.

Abilities:

  • Support instructors and students to promote a positive learning environment.
  • Provide responsible assistance in the preparation of materials and lessons.
  • Tutor students in an assigned area, monitor student progress, and confer with instructors.
  • Administer, correct, and record test results.
  • Work with students from a wide range of cultural backgrounds, ages, and academic abilities.
