Position SummaryThe special education teacher is primarily responsible for effective teaching and learning of the assigned subject(s) following district approved curriculum, instruction and assessment practices. The teacher may teach in a variety of elementary and/or secondary educational settings to include, but not limited to, Life Skills, Behavior Development, Structured Communications, and Learning Resource/Support. Primary responsibility includes ensuring student safety and collaborating to meet each student’s readiness to learn, providing needed guidance, discipline, and welfare.
SupervisionThe teacher works with a high level of independence and professional discretion under the general supervision of a designated school administrator and may also receive direction from a district special education administrator. The teacher’s work is governed, controlled, and evaluated by professional practice, school and district policies and regulations, and the collective bargaining agreement.
Duties and Responsibilities- Plan student success by assessing needs, setting learning goals, and monitoring progress using district approved tools and strategies.
- Collaborate in a professional learning community with teachers, support staff, and multidisciplinary teams to address student needs and develop effective teaching practices.
- Plan lessons using accepted professional practice consistent with district curriculum and instructional practice, and incorporate research‑based strategies to keep learning relevant.
- Maintain reasonable and meaningful grading and evaluation consistent with district policy, communicate results to students and parents, and update electronic grade systems.
- Integrate district approved or required technology into planning, learning, progress reporting, and record‑keeping, including preparation of IEPs.
- Create and maintain classroom management practices that engage students and enforce discipline.
- Actively participate in faculty, grade‑level, or department meetings; support school program evaluation; apply policies, standards, and state requirements.
- Observe students for risks, and engage staff when a student is at risk or in danger. Serve as a positive role model.
- Assist in supervising students at school activities and events; remain vigilant and intervene in inappropriate behavior or bullying.
- Plan reflection time on professional practice, develop growth plans, and review progress annually with the administrator.
- Follow board policies and stay current with updates and changes.
- Perform all other duties assigned.
- Bachelor’s and/or Master’s degree.
- Valid teaching certification issued by NM PED.
- Demonstrated knowledge of the subjects/levels taught.
- Effective verbal and written communication with parents, students, and staff.
- Lift and/or move 50‑100 pounds; assist, move, or restrain students as needed.
- Frequent sitting, lifting, carrying, moving, hearing, speaking, and extensive computer use.
- Possible need to break up fights.
- Work in outside weather conditions, exposing to wet or humid conditions, temperature fluctuations, fumes, hazardous chemicals, blood, or other infectious materials.
- Exposure to bodily fluids and waste during life skills or one‑on‑one situations.
- Travel in school‑owned vehicles while supervising and assisting students.
