Assistant Professor Of Navajo Linguistics (AST, ASC, FULL, Prof)

Instructs and facilitates a meaningful and effective learning experience of the course competencies in classroom, field, and K-12 educational settings. Position is subject to all terms and provisions of the NTU faculty contract.

This position requires knowledge and competence in Applied Linguistics.

Job duties and responsibilities include:

  • Selects and prepares course outlines and instructional materials.
  • Develops and maintains a classroom environment conducive to effective learning.
  • Prepares lesson plans incorporating varied instructional techniques.
  • Instructs students in the field of study.
  • Takes, maintains, and submits attendance reports.
  • Assists students regarding up-to-date information on degrees or certificates.
  • Maintains accurate files on each advisee and refers students to specialized services.
  • Sets up, plans, and supervises work of students in shop or laboratory.
  • Designs tests and evaluates student achievement.
  • Takes all necessary safety precautions.
  • Provides assessments regarding performance measures.
  • Evaluates student progress on a regular basis.
  • Provides regular feedback on work and assignments.
  • Participates in community service initiatives or projects.
  • Provides accurate and timely reports as requested.
  • Assists in program reviews and accreditation guidelines.
  • Participates in efforts to recruit and retain students.
  • Conducts research in the field of study.
  • Identifies grant opportunities and prepares proposals.
  • Attends graduate committee meetings.
  • Holds regular office hours to assist students.
  • Seeks and assists students in obtaining internships.
  • Collaborates with colleagues to share experience and knowledge.
  • Attends and participates in faculty meetings and other required meetings.
  • Maintains confidentiality of all privileged information.
  • The ability to take responsibility and to work to deadlines.
  • Structured and clear communication skills.
  • Use a range of learning and teaching approaches.
  • Use a variety of teaching assessment techniques.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Supervision responsibilities include:

  • Supervise doctoral dissertations to completion.
  • Advise graduate students, monitor their academic progress, and act as a mentor.

Minimum qualifications/requirements include:

  • D. degree complete by June 30, 2025 in Applied Linguistics, Linguistics, Education, or relevant field.
  • Specialization or experience in instruction of North American Indigenous languages.
  • Willingness to learn Navajo.
  • Valid and clean state driver's license.
  • Must be able to pass background check, with NO prior convictions of any felonies and no history of child abuse and/or neglect.

Preferred qualifications/requirements include:

  • Teaching experience at an Indigenous-serving institution.
  • Teaching experience using distance delivery.
  • Proficiency in Navajo or another Indigenous language of the Americas.
  • Professional excellence, community service and/or publication.

Knowledge, skill and ability requirements include:

  • Knowledge of applicable federal, state, county and local laws, regulations, and requirements.
  • Knowledge of field of study.
  • Knowledge of techniques and practices in field.
  • Knowledge of University policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of instructional policies and procedures.
  • Skilled in operating computers and office machines.
  • Ability to write reports and business correspondence.
  • Ability to organize and express ideas, directions, and data in a logical sequence.
  • Ability to present materials effectively to individual students or groups.
  • Ability to manage interpersonal conflict situations requiring tact, diplomacy and discretion.
  • Ability to work independently and meet strict timelines.
  • Ability to oversee the work of students.
  • Ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with individuals of varying social and cultural backgrounds.
  • Ability to communicate effectively.

Physical demands include:

  • No special physical demands.

Work environment includes:

  • Work is typically performed within an office, classroom or laboratory.
  • Tight time constraints and multiple demands are common.
  • Evening and/or weekend work may be required. Extended hours and irregular shifts may be required.
