After-School Band Advisor
The After-School Band Advisor provides instruction, leadership, and supervision for students participating in the school's band program outside regular school hours. The advisor develops students' musical skills, prepares ensembles for performances, and promotes a positive, inclusive learning environment that encourages teamwork, discipline, and artistic growth.
General duties and responsibilities:
- Plan and conduct after-school band rehearsals and practice sessions.
- Teach and reinforce proper instrumental techniques, music reading, and performance skills.
- Select appropriate music and materials for student skill levels and program goals.
- Prepare students for concerts, festivals, competitions, parades, and other performances.
- Monitor student attendance, participation, and progress.
- Maintain a safe, organized, and positive rehearsal environment.
- Supervise students during rehearsals, performances, and related activities.
- Coordinate performance schedules and event logistics with school administration and staff.
- Communicate regularly with students, parents, and school personnel regarding program activities and expectations.
- Encourage student responsibility, teamwork, discipline, and good citizenship.
- Assist with instrument inventory, music library organization, and equipment maintenance.
- Ensure proper care, storage, and security of instruments and band equipment.
- Support student recruitment and retention efforts for the band program.
- Follow school district policies, procedures, and safety guidelines as well as the Dexter Athletics/Activities Handbook.
- Manage program budgets and fundraising activities, when assigned.
- Collaborate with other teachers, music staff, and community organizations to support program objectives.
- Attend required meetings, professional development activities, and school events as directed.
- Evaluate student performance and provide constructive feedback to support musical growth.
- Develop the band program to be able to participate in marching band competitions and performances.
Desired qualifications:
- High School Diploma.
- Knowledge of instrumental music instruction and band performance techniques.
- Ability to work effectively with students of varying ages and skill levels.
- Strong organizational, communication, and leadership skills.
- Ability to supervise and motivate students in a group setting.
- Previous experience directing, teaching, or assisting with a school band program preferred.
Physical requirements:
1. Sitting, standing, lifting and carrying (up to 30 pounds) reaching, squatting, kneeling, and moving light furniture may be required.
2. Ability to stand and conduct rehearsals for extended periods.
3. Ability to lift, move, and set up musical equipment as needed.
4. Ability to travel with students to performances and events when required.
Safety and health:
1. Knowledge of universal hygiene precautions.
2. Knowledge of school safety procedures (fire drills, lockdowns, severe weather, etc.)
3. General knowledge of first aid procedures.
Equipment/material handled:
1. Must know how to properly operate or be willing to learn to operate all equipment necessary for student success.
Working environment:
Must be able to work within various degrees of noise, temperature, and air quality. Interruptions of work are routine. Flexibility and patience are required. Must be self-motivated and able to complete job assignments without direct supervision. After hour work may be required.
Terms of employment:
1. FLSA exempt employee.
2. Salary and work year to be established by the Superintendent.
